Pair 1

In this essay, we would like to discuss about the differences and the contrasts of two ted
talks given by our lecturer. The ted talks videos, the first video “Secrets of learning a new
language” by Lydia Machova and the second one is “Learning a language? Speak it like you are
playing a video games” by Marianna Pascal,  . Nowadays, learning a new language is very vital
for all of us. As human beings, we use language to communicate to another people. People
should learn and know at least two language to facilitate their life in communication. As all of us
know that learning a new language takes time and dedication however we should try it because
fluent in a second language offers luminous benefits and opportunities. Besides, learning a
second language is exciting and beneficial at all ages. It offers practical intellectual and many
aspirational benefits. In today’s world, there is over 7000 languages. If we can learn or know at
least two languages it can help us in life massively. People who have learn many languages
they can obtain more experiences and knowledge. This advantage can bring us more benefits
especially during applying a job. We cannot deny that a lot of companies are looking for
employees who can speak more languages and and have a good communication skill. This is
significant to deal with someone else or others.

Based on the two videos that we have watched, the similarities point here is not afraid of being
judge by other people. For the first video, Benny from Ireland who previously study in Irish
Gaelic School and 5 years in German but he cannot speak the language well. And one day he
found his own method on how to speak other language which is by learning several phrases of
the language and memorize the word from day one. At his age 21, he managed to understand
and speak with 10 languages from the method that he found. Benny is not afraid of talking to
people because he learn from the feedback. And on that day he found the secrets of learning a
new language. For the second video, Faizal from Malaysia who now worked as Factory
Supervisor. Faizal has low level of English but he can respond what the others said in English.
Faizal can sit and listen to all of the communications and he can absolutely respond and
express his thought beautifully at a very low level of English. He does not mind of being judge
because that is a learning process for him. He learned by just to focus on how other people talk
to him and get the result from what they said. Faizal just respond what the people need. Faizal
is not worry about his own mistakes and do not have self-awareness. In conclusion about this
paragraph, we cannot be afraid about the judgement because that is apart of learning process
to improve our English and other languages. We just have to be confidence in whatever we do
and learn from the mistakes. The repetition process is an effective learning for long term
memory. And many polyglots practice in an event where 100 of language lovers meet in one
place to practise their language without afraid of being judge.

After watching both videos we can summaries that both videos indicate we should learn the
language as something to enjoy to make the process easy and enthusiastic. This idea will
enable us to learn the language faster and more effectively. In the first video, the speaker
offered some ideas on how the linguists are able to learn different languages for, example use
colourful grammar charts, handmade flash cards and using apps. It is available based on our
personal enjoyment. The speaker shared an idea on how to practice the foreign languages such
as revise and memorize the vocabulary in the course of a few days repeatedly for long term
memory which called space repetition. In the second video, the speaker frequently stated that
English is not an art to be mastered, but it’s just a tool to use to get a result. Student’s are
judged more on correctness than clarity. the speaker stated that we need to use the language in
our daily routine although we have low level of language. If we do not enjoyed the process of
the learning of new languages the brain could shutting down. Three symptoms of brain shutting
down your listening which is you try to understand and express yourself correctly and this is
what we called multitasking that is not everyone has this ability to do it in correct ways, secondly
is your speaking which is the vocabulary you know just disappears and the words do not come
out, thirdly is the confidence which is you could be not confident because you cannot express
yourself clearly.

Similarities based on the two video’s is to understand what we learn. As for the first video is
about learning a new languages, it is how you understand the process of the learning and the
languages it self. There is no shortcuts in learning, so basically we need to find ways to make
sure we understand the process of learning and the languages. A very important point to
understand the whole learning process of new languages is a patience, some of beginners for
new language’s learners they take years to learn one new languages, it is actually a long time
just to learn a new language. But with an effective way, the polyglots only takes months to learn
a new language and there is some only takes two months to learn it. Every polyglots has its own
unique ways in learning new languages, such as Benny he learn few phrases from travel
phrasebook and goes to meet native speakers right away, and as for Lucas, he added hundred
random Russians speakers on skype, while let that two strangers talking to each others without
the knowing about it, while he learn the way to start conversations in Russia. For the second
video is about learning English language. It is also about how well somebody communicate in
English but in a very low level language. Some of Malaysians takes years to learn English but
still maintain in low level language for English. In this video about how you deliver the messages
and make sure the listeners understand the messages. It is a lot to do with attitude towards
English, because some people with low level language communicates very well. One of this
special person named Faizal, he could listen to anybody, and he could respond express his
beautiful thoughts. Most importantly, while learning new languages don’t focus on yourself, but
focus on the person and the result you want to achieve.

From the first video, this Ted talks video message about learning other language, about how
people managed to learn new language in a short period of time. Most of the people who is
Polyglots (which is people who speaks a lot of languages) simply found ways to enjoy the
language learning process because actually there is no shortcuts in learning. The principle for
this polyglots’ people in learning other language is crucial to find enjoyment, an effective
methods in learning, create system in your learning such as plan time to study and need a lot
patience. As for the second video, this video is totally different from the first video since this
video’s focus to only English language. In learning an English language as long as you
understand English, then you could just go ahead and take actions. There is two difference
types communicators the first one who is the one who is got a high-level language in English,
but focused on herself and getting it right therefore very ineffective way, for the second on with
low-level but totally focus on the person she’s talking to and getting a result. Basically, the
differences is in the way you deliver the message and your focus on reaching goals. There is a
scenario where a guy playing video games but he is totally a terrible player. There is a few
friends watching him play, but there was no embarrassment because he only focus on reaching
the game goal. The way to really learn English is doesn’t feel judged, entirely focus on the
person he’s speaking to and the result he wants to get, no self awareness and no thought about
his own mistakes. The challenge is people take the attitude they developed about English in
school and they bring it into their adult life and into their work. So in general, the first differences
are how to learn a language, the principle and the method and the second differences the main
idea of both videos are totally different, which is learning new languages and learn English.
