CHAPTER 2. INTRODUCTORY CHAPTER

1.1 Introduction

1.2 Company Background

The organization is named Indo-Zim because it emerged after an agreement between the
government of Zimbabwe and the government of India as a result of the ITEC programme
(Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation Programme). It is an attempt to share the milestone
achievements of India’s socio-economic development in technology with other developing
countries. Indo-Zim was established in 2007 at Harare institute of Technology and officially
started operating in 2010. The mandate of Indo-Zim is to empower SMEs through the latest
manufacturing technologies. The Indo -Zim Technology Centre falls under the Ministry of Small
and Medium Enterprises and was established to promote production and on the job training
requirements for MSMEs,Institutions and industry at large in various technical fields. The Centre
is equipped with modern equipment in the areas of tool and die making ,CNC and CAD/CAM
and printed circuits boards Manufacture aimed at improving productivity and the quality of
products made by MSMEs and industry at large in various technical fields.

Production

The centre offers the following services:

 Design and manufacture of moulds

 Design and manufacture of press tools
 Design and manufacture of jigs and fixtures
 Design and manufacture of precision machine components and spares
 Hardening and Tampering
 Manufacture of injection moulded plastic products
 Design and manufacture of Printed Circuit Board (PCB)
 Hiring of injection machines, press machines, conventional machines and PCB plant to
MSMEs.
Training

The centre has been offering quarterly hands on short term training in the following areas since
2014:

Program Duration Cost

Basic Machining 40Hrs $100.00

CNC Milling 40Hrs $100.00

CNC Turning 40Hrs $100.00

AutoCad - Level 1 40Hrs $150.00

AutoCad -Level 2 40Hrs $150.00

MasterCam -Design 40Hrs $100.00

MasterCam -DNC 80Hrs $100.00

MasterCam -Machining 80Hrs $120.00

Pro/Engineer -Part Design 40Hrs $250.00

Pro/Engineer -Drafting 40Hrs $250.00

Introduction to SolidWorks 40Hrs $150.00

Solidworks Part Modelling 40Hrs $150.00

The objectives of the centre is to provide facilities in high technology precision machining areas,
carpentry and training which are affordable to individual SMEs .These services are offered to
industries on chargeable basis .

RECOMMENDATIONS TO THE ORGANISATION

As it was established in the strides to help SMEs out there, it is not serving its purpose because
only a few are aware of it and benefiting from it. Therefore, I think there is need to market the
organization well and benefit as many SMEs as possible. It must also own its own generator that
works when there is no electricity because the absence of electricity has been a great setback to
the company’s productivity

1.3 Company Location

Indo-Zim is located at the Harare Institute of Technology campus in Belvedere, Harare. The
workshop is equipped with CNC lathe machines, CNC milling machines, conventional machines
that help SMEs who don’t own machines. All machines are supplied from India. There are many
workshops being established across Zimbabwe in areas like Bulawayo, Chinhoyi, Bindura,
Murehwa, Magamba, Lupani, Gwenuchena, Mvuma, Gokwe, Gwanda amd Marondera.

1.4 Company Vision and Mission

2.1.1 Vision

To be the nerve centre for sustainable, inclusive socio-economic empowerment, growth

and development of SMMEs and cooperatives .

2.1.2 Mission

To create and maintain an enabling environment that promotes the development and
sustainable growth of micro, small and medium enterprises and cooperatives.

2.1.3 Core values and Goals

Economic Goal: to stimulate growth and create wealth.

Social and Cultural Goal: to create sustainable employment opportunities and reduce
poverty.

Environmental Goal: to promote environmental conservation practices among MSMEs

and cooperatives.

Values

In pursuance of the desire to fulfil its mandate and vision, the Ministry shall be guided by
the following values:
 Integrity
 Transparency
 Efficiency
 Accountability
 Professionalism

Training Programme

DEPARTMENTS COVERED

Endor -Zim Technology Centre has 4 Departments namely:

CNC production section, Mechanical section

furnace and welding Department

Plastic Production Department

Productive work has been done in department 1, where the student managed to have practical
hands on most of the machinery through practical exercises assigned by the supervisor .
Department1 has the following machines:

 Horizontal Milling Machine (CM102)

 Conventional Milling (CM101)
 Surface Grinder (SG101)
 Radial Arm Drill (RDR101)
 Rockwell Scale
 Tool Preseter
 Power Saw

Projects Accomplished

Construction of a Portable bench Vice

Objectives of the project

To enable the student to be exposed to and learn how to progress from design to actual
fabrication of equipment, using convectional system .

Introduction

A vice is a mechanical device used to secure an object to allow work to be performed on it.Vices
have two parallel jaws ,one fixed and the other movable, threaded in and out by a screw and
lever.
Description of a bench vice

Figure2.1: Sideview 1 of bench vice Figure2.2: Sideview 2 of bench device

The purpose of a bench vice is to hold material steady. allowing you to use both hands to work
on the material with other tools. The bench vice is of the clamp base bench design. It is a light
weight, portable vice.it consists of a pair of movable and fixed jaws. the jaws clamp on to the
workpiece using the lateral motion provided to them using a spindle. The spindle with v threads
is rotated using a handle lever. The jaws move closer as the lever is rotated in the clockwise
direction and move away when turned in the anti-clockwise direction

The required machining operations to be performed are:

 Facing, chamfering, step turning to provide clamping surface to jaws.

 Squaring or milling, surface grinding.
 Drilling, threading, Marking.
 Filling
 C -clamp for clamping the vice on the table.
Challenges faced

Among other challenges, the major challenge faced was frequent power cuts during the working
hours, which made it much difficult to finish assigned tasks and to do more exercises to fully
utilise the machines, very little progress was made as expected. While the project was in
progress significant practical skills were acquired and faced several challenges in machinery
operation. The lack of adequate machining tools from the tools store poised a delay in doing
work and had to source for tools else where .
