Deactivation of SBC Self-Test Without STAR DIAGNOSIS

Always use extreme caution when working under your car or around
electrical, fuel and in some cases brake systems (SBC), or moving engine and
transmission parts. If you are not confident with what you are going to do, it is
always a good idea to seek help from others, or take your car to service.

The SBC system must be deactivated before performing any brake work to
prevent SBC self-test. When working on the SBC brake system brake pedal must
not be pressed under any circumstances as this leads to the brake pistons
moving out automatically. SBC self-test will be carried out if any of the following
occurs:

 The vehicle is opened by remote control.

 The driver, front passenger, or rear door is opened.

 The trunk is opened.

 The key is turned to position 1 in the ignition switch (EIS).

 The brake pedal is operated.

 The parking brake is released.

No persons or animals should stay in the vehicle when working on the SBC
brake system.

Before start working it is absolutely essential to read through the complete

work description, as the work must be completed in quick succession.

1. Raise the car using lifting platform or jack and jack stands, until all
wheels are free.

2. Open the driver side window and leaved open.

3. Turn off all electrical consumers of the vehicle and remove the key from
the ignition switch. For cars with Keyless Go: Press start/stop button
repeatedly until ignition is switched off.

Disable the SBC self-test:

1. (t1) - Close and lock vehicle doors and leave vehicle centrally locked for
min. 30 seconds. Cars w/Keyless Go: Remove the key from the vehicle
and store it outside the transmitter rang for at least 2 minutes. During
this time the run-on of the SBC brake system elapses.
2. (t2) – Unlock the car for at least 15 seconds. The brake pedal must not
be pressed any more from now on. An SBC self-test may run during this
time.

3. Lock vehicle in order to prevent people getting in. if engine hood is

unlocked, when car is locked the alarm system is triggered.

15 seconds after locking the car following operations can be carried out in
the wheel brake area:
 Replace front and rear brake pads
 Replace front and rear brake disks
 Replace parking brake shoes.
Once the operations are completed the SBC must be activated.
The hydraulic unit temperature must be a maximum of 80⁰ C.
1. Unlock the car, but do not open any of the doors. Through the already
opened driver side window insert the key in ignition and switch it on (Z2). Cars
w/Keyless Go; do not activate any Keyless Go functions for the following work.
2. Switch the ignition OFF (Z0), wait 1 to 5 Seconds (t3) and switch ignition
on again (Z2), but do not start the engine. Keep the ignition switched on for next
steps.
3. Rotate rear left wheel swiftly and evenly in the running direction for at
least 3 seconds (t4) (1 to 2 revolution(s) (n)) and then stop the wheel.
4. Rotate front left wheel swiftly and evenly in the running direction. The
front left wheel must be rotated no more than 60 seconds (t5) after the rear left
wheel. Rotate the wheel (1 to 2 revolution(s) (n)) until it is stalled automatically.
Flashing on and off 3 times (A) confirms successful activation:
This will start SBC routine. Front and rear brakes are applied several times.
After approximately 50 seconds the application routine is completed.
4. Lower the car and switch OFF ignition (Z0).
5. Get in the car start the engine and depress the brake pedal 5 to 10 times.
If a fault message is displayed in the multifunction display: repeat
activation of application routine. If the error message continues to be shown in
the display after repeating the activation several times car needs to be taken to
service equipped w/STAR DIAGNOSIS and faulty memory should be read and
erased.
