Educational assistants play a valuable and vital role in helping students
successfully access curriculum and services, while learning in a positive, safe and supportive environment. Educational assistants contribute to the education of students in inclusive schools and classrooms by: Implementing supplemental small-group and individual student support (academic, functional, pro-social, programs from district service providers) and homework help for students. Engaging in class wide monitoring of student work (independent or small-group work) identified and planned by teachers and EST- Resource, Literacy, and Numeracy. Supporting the collection of evidence on student performance and progress, based on collection systems designed by teachers or ESTs (Resource, Literacy, and Numeracy). Assisting students who require personal care supports (eating, toileting, dressing). Facilitating peer interactions based on guidance from the teacher and the EST-Resource, EST-Literacy, EST-Numeracy, and EST- Guidance Counsellor (teach pro-social skills, fade presence and supports as appropriate, and invite students the help each other). Engaging in non-instructional tasks identified by teachers and EST-Resource, EST-Literacy, EST-Numeracy, and EST-Guidance Counsellor. Being flexible about school-based re-assignment, in accordance with the Collective Agreement, by school administrators and ESS Team. Promoting and fostering independence with students. Supporting class-wide or small groups as directed by classroom teacher
