2.0 BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION

2.1 Introduction

2
We are at information age where it is inevitable to encourage the practice of science and
technology since it has a great impact in our daily lives in many aspects such as infrastructure,
energy, industrial, health, education, communication, financial, entertainment, transport,
agricultural, economic and environmental activities.
Africa is one of the richest continents with natural reserves of raw materials but the resources
are exploited by foreigners. Despite the fact that it has 60% of the world’s unused arable land,
yet Africa import approximately $80-billion worth of food every year from western countries.
This is because we have poor technological knowledge on the implementation level of science
and technology.
Despite the fact that implementation of science and technology is expensive due to the
involvement of tools, materials, and systems which are at the high demand for finance, the
awareness and technical support are the great challenges.
Awareness is the key to improvement, this involves accurate and positive information,
education, consultation, and support. So, it is necessary to provide accurate, consistent and
reliable up to date information with the use of simple and appropriate methods, tools,
materials, and systems.
There is a need of introducing awareness regarding the practice of science, engineering, and
technology to the children at their younger age by emphasizing the earlier initiative efforts on
the basics of science subjects; because children at a young age have high development
capacity due to their receptive and flexible brain.

2.2: Origin of FSWA

3
FSWA is a non-government organization (NGO) with registration number 00NGO/R/0186 under
the Nongovernmental organization act, 2002 section 11(1) and 17(2) of act n0.24.

It operates at the regional and national level to improve the level of science and technology.
The headquarter of this organization is located in Dodoma town.

This organization aim to introduce the creative methodology of explaining, extract and
interpreting the ideas, concepts, and principles of sciences using outdoor activities in relation to
real life

The name FSWA comes from the expected output, where the organization expects to promote
the youth to graduate with passion and skills towards science and technology, good health
status, and sports potential in relation to their cultural and traditional life.

Our motto
“Life is science, science is life”

Core values
• Integrity
• Inclusion
• Perseverance
• Respect and dignity
• Fairness
• Relevance
• Compassion
• professionalism

3.0 PROBLEMS STATEMENT ANALYSIS

 Problem statement

The fifth phase of government policy, a renewed commitment to industrialization. This is the
most part of a broader agenda to create employment and substantially to reduce poverty. It
is true that the growth of science and technology is pronounced in the western continents, the
pace in Africa especially Tanzania is very slow then how can we meet this policy without
proper scientists?
Although there are efforts done in schools (earlier grades) to implement awareness in science
subjects to children, research suggests that many students at each stage of academic period

4
fails science subjects and favor art subjects. Many children believe that science subjects are so
difficult and boring that was not meant for Africans and they can never do anything about
their lives.
Lack of teaching and learning facilities may be the major factor; this is because tools, materials,
and systems involved in science and technology are expensive,
Not only a lack of facilities but also an inadequate number of teachers to provide awareness
and technical support towards science and technology are a great challenge.
Lack of creative methods on teaching science subjects to the children, or unmanaged policies
toward science and technology led to negative perception toward science subjects. Most of the
methods used are difficult, more theories to support the learning process

Solution statement

In order to change those negative perception and attitude toward science subjects to the
children, it is necessary to introduce easy, simple, funny and comprehensible techniques that
are more practical and friendly to our tradition and social-cultural ways.
This is what led to the vision and objectives of this project

❖ Vision
Envision the bright future of science and technology by prepare and develop youth careers
towards science subjects to the needs of economic development.

❖ Mission
In collaboration with institutions, government and organizations which are experts in science
and technology, sports as well medical personnel’s local and international, we are going to
introduce a creative methodology to expose, motivate and inspire youth towards science and
technology.

Project Objectives
The overall objective of the project is to

5
Motivate, inspire and encourage students to participate in outdoor activities by developing
and shaping their scientific carriers toward science and technology

Other objectives

• Unleash potential and talents in sports career.

• Develop good health status with proper physical education.
• Promote and encourage the practice of tradition and culture in relation to science and
technology

4.0 PROJECT METHODOLOGY AND IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGIES

Sports are our primary methodology of exploring science phenomena

Why sports?
6
This is because sports are universal language to any activity, as it is a free learning environment
tool which can unite, bring happiness and joy with free tension of mind as it is a better method to
attract the interest of children with easier, simple and comprehensible way.
Also, they provide a universal framework for learning values, thus contributing to the
development of soft skills needed for responsible individuals.
Then, two approaches are going to be used to implementing the methods to reach our core goal.

(i) Correlation approach

Correlation-based on the mutual relationship between two or more actions, events or objects, in
this approach we are going to correlate the basics of the sports with concepts associated with the
science subjects,
This is creative diversity inherent in learning as the context through which scientific principles
can be explored. Through the vehicle of sports, not only are students learning the underlying
principles of science embedded in the mechanics of performing a sport but also they are learning
the scientific principles in an atmosphere that embraces the psycho-social-creative-emotional
connection to learning.
This approach is going to involve the like of mathematics topics (geometry, algebra, statistics,
averages, percentages, etc) physics topics (light, sound, energy, force, pressure,
Electricity, electronics, etc) with the basics of sports’ tools (balls, pitch, courts fields, tracks, etc)
and actions (shooting, dribbling, passing, projections, etc
For instance, in their everyday lives, students learn how to ride a bike, throw a ball, and/or jump
rope. They learn these activities in an environment that is non-competitive and non-threatening
academically.
What they are not aware of is the scientific and mathematics principles laden in performing these
activities.
In the classroom, students learn these scientific and mathematical principles in a context that is
foreign to their everyday experiences. They learn about the trajectory of a golf ball without
connecting this principle with the actual practice of hitting a golf ball.

Let’s take an example of finding the circumference of a circle with the help of real basketball
without the formula to get the real meaning of what circumference means and how the formula
related to the meaning. In this case, the student won’t use a lot of Energy to memorize the
formula, because they will understand the concept from the real meaning.

7
Mode of deliverance

Videos of their actions in sports correlated to sports

It is simple to understand any concept if you are part of it, especially through your actions, that it
gave you the reality and belief, the inside motivational and learning from your muscle memories
principle.
So with this mode, when they participate in the sports they like, in the moment of their joy, we
will take records through videos and try to breakdown the concepts of different science topics.
Where the way of presentation will be in the form of a short film documentary

8
(ii) Engaging approach

The basic idea on engaging approach is based on the involving or participation in relation to the
interest of youth on a certain sports programs, and then it will be easy to introduce our
different programs related to social-cultural, physical education, civic and moral education,
nutrition, biology, arts.
These FSWA programs support active learning, complement cognitive skills and give students
increasing amounts of responsibility, and enhance their level of concentration and
participation, also they are flexible and have a strong cross-curricular potential: they can
reinforce existing curricula and can be streamed across different subjects.

Ultimately, these programs help students to transfer and put values into action outside the
school environment, by getting engaged in their communities, making informed decisions,
being sensitive and respecting the others and the environment. These programs also develop
self-confidence, active and healthy lifestyle choices, and an understanding of rights, supporting
the delicate transition to the independence of adulthood.

On this method, we will let the student participate in different sports in which they are much
interested on them as a part of entertainment then there will be a session of exhibitions of social-
cultural events, innovations, ideas, and talents

IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGIES

Mode of deliverance and implementation will be based on FSWA clubs activities, where they
are categorized into two types
 FSWA sports club-in this club we will introduce different sports in schools, they can be
officially known and those which are traditional sports depending on students interests.
Examples of sports are like basketball, volleyball, table tennis, athletics, tug of war, long
jump

9
 FSWA science clubs in these clubs, the basics of science subjects are going to be
extracted with the different mode of operation. There will be some programs
introduced the likes of

Scientifically and mathematical tips and tricks

Tricks arise the curiosity and develop the mindset on a follow up as it exercises the
mind and gives the quicker ways of solving problems, and through tips, they will get
the information of the science and technology in relation to their real lives with the
help of transparent facts

Narrative stories(inspiration and innovative stories)

From inspiration stories from the great scientist innovations, they will draw interest
in concepts, and wake up the slept desire, passion and courage to think differently,
work out and respect their ideas.
Also, we believe that from those stories, they will understand the origin of
many different ideas of the today science, technology and engineering ➢
Exhibition and experimentation of existing scientific projects.

The existing projects like those already done in colleges or any individual or science
personnel are so interesting and can emphasize the children to love and be aware of
scientifically principles and concepts applied in the project and make them curious to
know how they made them.

Computation thinking

In education, computational thinking (CT) is a set of problem-solving methods that

involve expressing problems and their solutions in ways that a computer could
execute. It involves the mental skills and practices for designing computations that
get computers to do jobs for us and explaining and interpreting the world as a
complex of information processes.

During implementation, the following are going to be extracted

 Meaning of the topics to be demonstrated

10
 Basic Idea of all concepts, ideas, and principles related to topics
 all associated sports related to topics
 Tips about the Real application in life (important and application)
 Inspiration innovation stories about the topics
 Relationship and reality of the formula used to the concept of the topic.
 Summary of the whole topic from the videos of their actions.

5.0 PROJECT SUSTAINABILITY AND CHALLENGES EXPECTED

 In order for this project to prosper in effective ways, the professionals are very important.
So we are going to feature the like of

• Science teachers
• Physical trainers (specialist for children)
• Sports teachers
• Physicians
• Audio and videographer editors and producers

11
• Sports science analysts
 Also In collaboration with institutions, government and organizations which are experts in
science and technology, sports as well medical personnel’s local and international, we are
going to introduce a creative methodology to expose, motivate and inspire youth towards
science and technology. Example COSTECH, VETA,SIDO,BMT,MOE,NM-AIST,STI,BASATA,
 membership dues, the sales of our goods like books (online as well as hardcopy), and
programmed services from streaming channels (like youtube), social problem solving and
exhibition as well advertisement dues from several individuals who need our services.
 Through grants from an international institution, the national government also private
donors it will help in the operation of this project

CHALLENGES EXPECTED

In order for this project to succeed, all schools should have an area to practice the basic sports,
which will be difficult for all schools to have a large area to meet the requirements of all sports.
So at least each region in Tanzania should have more than ten sport’s centers which will be
filled with all resources since it and that results in expenses

6.0 PROJECT ESTIMATION DURATION AND LOCATION

This project is endless when it had successfully started, so it will be a continuous at different
level kinds, as it will start with children at a lower level grades then to higher levels depending
on the expansion and availability of resources needed.
It is going to start in Dodoma regional as a pilot from primary and secondary schools, from town
to rural areas for two years where the first year will be a pilot year to make the basic foundations
of the project.
The demonstration will be done in nine schools at Dodoma town starting at 5 august to 7
December before taking the pilot year on 70 schools.

12
The first take will be about five years period, in which each year is divided into three phases of 4
months for implementing the project as well as monitoring and evaluation
The following is the statistical summary on the number of schools going to be exposed by this
project

7.0OUTPUT RESULT EXPECTED, MONITORING,

MEASUREMENT AND EVALUATION ANALYSIS

 PROJECT MONITORING
We expect to monitor and analyses all activities during and after implementation. The process
will be continuous through the year to all schools which have been exposed to the program.

In this process, we will create, sports and science clubs which will engage students to students
as well their teachers with the assistance of our well-trained personnel’s from our organization.
These clubs will be inter as well as intra networked to other schools, where one school will be
able to communicate and share ideas with another, and we will try to make follow up with the
research guides accountable to any challenges rose.

13
 PROJECT MEASUREMENT AND EVALUATION
It won’t be easy to measure and evaluate the output of this project for a short period of time,
although there are some strategies approach created that will help on short term
measurements and evaluation standards which are

(i) Problem-based approaches

After the illustration of the basic principle, there will be assignments on a student’s regarding
how they can use a particular technology to solve daily social –culture challenges. This approach
may involve models developments

(ii) Challenges esteem (Quiz and tests.)

There will be some quiz and tests which are neither difficult to let them quit nor so easy so that to
challenge their understanding capacity regarding a particular topic. And all of these will be
accompanied by awards for the best performers so that to let them focus and be motivated so as
the ideas to stick to their mind.

Any competition will increase the level of creativity, hard-working and individual development;
this is why this approach is so much important

(iii) Mathematical and computational thinking.

This approach is going to measure and evaluate the understanding capacity also to trigger the
ability of the student to think outside the box when comes the matter of thinking and decision
making.
From the output of this project we expect

highly integration connection of concepts,

Where the children will be able to make a connection and close relationship of the
concepts

Relevance

The children are going to understand that science and technology is not an imagination, it
is real and so applicable in their real word

14

Fairness, teamwork, equality, inclusion, perseverance, and respect

Sports are universal language where it gives the core values of a life

Unleash potentials and talents

A lot of kids have talents and potential on doing something greater although they are not
exposed to certain events which can help to understand their abilities ➢ Passion and courage
in practice of science and technology aspects

We are going to make great scientist and engineers who will become key to solve our
social-economical, cultural challenges

Good health

As long as sports are involved, then they are going to be physical exercises direct or
indirect in which are going to be healthy to them

15
