Field-A is one of the giant fields located in offshore Abu Dhabi; it was discovered in 1958,
and production began in 1962.Down-flank water injection began in 1973 followed by
crestal gas injection in 1994. The Arab reservoir in Field-A is formed of regressive cycles of
sedimentation divided into four highly heterogeneous sub-reservoirs (labelled in ascending
order from A to D. The principal oil-producing reservoirs include Arab zone C and Arab-D,
whereas Arab-A and B still remain undeveloped. Based on the core description, the Arab
reservoir section is mainly composed of three lithologies, namely anhydrite (purple
shading), dolomite (green), and limestone (light blue). Arab reservoir characterization is
challenging, with a wide variation of rock fluid properties across Arab sub-reservoirs. The
dominant lithology changes from highly dolomitic across Arab A at the top, to be more
limestone-dominated at Arab D level, accompanied by heterogeneity of properties like
porosity and permeability.

Lithofacies-based corrections to density-neutron crossplot total porosity in a high porosity

gas and oil bearing turbidite sandstone reservoir, Erha Field, OPL 209, deepwater Nigeria
Russell W. Spears ExxonMobil Production Company, Houston, Texas

Because some of the reservoir section at Erha is gas bearing, the formation density porosity
observed in these intervals is abnormally high while the neutron porosity in these same
sections is significantly lower, as expected.
When the density porosity and compensated neutron logs are compared graphically on
compatible scales, the cleanest reservoir sands typically display greater than 18 porosity
units of gas crossover (Figure). Historically, it has been assumed that a linear crossplot of
density-neutron porosity is appropriate for porosity estimation in gas bearing section in
order to approximate true formation porosity in the absence of core porosity
measurements.
