1 a. Explain the theory on which the buckling of column is based. Can this theory be applied to

i) Under sharp yielding ii) Gradual yielding
and discuss their salient points. Is this - curve different from the - curve of hot rolled
steel? Explain. (12 Marks)

4 a. Explain the design procedure for light gauge steel tension members. (06 Marks)
b. Explain the connections related to cold formed steel under (i) riveting and (ii) welding, (with
suitable sketches.) (14 Marks)

5 a. Explain with neat sketches, the overall buckling related to cold formed sections under
different loading conditions. (14 Marks)
b. Explain the form factor and its importance in the design of columns. (06 Marks)

6 a. Explain the concept of stress distribution under flexure for a channel section under the
following conditions:
i) When the web of the section is horizontal
ii) When the web of the section is vertical (12 Marks)
b. State the equation related to allowable stress in bending in compression and explain.

7 What do you mean by local buckling and distortion buckling and how they are different
from Euler’s bucking? Explain with reference to different end conditions of column.
