Urbanization refers to the increase in the proportion of people living in
towns and cities. Urbanization occurs because people move from rural areas to
urban areas. Therefore accelerated urbanization is the rapid increase in population
within a short time. There are many problems caused by the rapid increase of
people in our city Kumba, some of these problems include; poor living conditions,
increase insecurity and crime rate, high rate of unemployment, sprawl housing,
congestion, which shall be expatiated in points below

 Poor living conditions: Accelerate urbanization has let to poor living condition
in that there is shortage of food and increase in infectious disease such as cholera,
typhoid and Sexually transmitted diseases . People are unable to afford a decent
meal due to the high cost of living. Also people relocating from rural areas are not
immune to the same diseases as long time city residents, which put them at a
greater risk of contracting the disease.

 Increase in Insecurity and crime rate: Due to the influx of different kinds of
people into the city, the level of crimes such as theft, rape and juvenile
delinquency increases, leading to high rates of insecurity.

 High rate of unemployment: The is high rate of unemployment because the

jobs available are not equal to the available population. Also most of the people
moving in are unskilled and uneducated. For example, a person coming in from
Konye may be unskilled and even uneducated thus leading to idleness and
unemployment.

 Sprawl housing: Accelerated urbanization has also led to sprawl housing in that
most house owners do not respect the building norms and town planning norms as
well. Because they have space, they keep on adding the size of their building up to
the extent of getting into restricted areas like roads and government reserved areas.
This obstructs modern facilities like water, electricity, and others. An example of
such a place is Fiango.

 Congestion: Accelerated urbanization leads to congestion in that, because of

unemployment, people are bound to idle a lot on streets, and other places such as
markets, hospitals and public offices thereby causing congestion. For example, the
Kumba main market.
