Supervisor Comment:

Maria is an independent student who demands a lot from herself. She started the process genuinely interested in
learning, growing, and thus making the time spent working on the PP well invested. She developed as a learner, she
made strong connections with people she interacted with throughout the process, and she produced a mural that is a
testimony of her sensitivity as an artist, of her love as a granddaughter, and of her empathy and civic sense towards the
smaller and larger community that is reached by her work.
It was a pleasure and an honor to be Maria’s Personal Project advisor.

Section A: Investigating

Defining a clear goal and personal interest

My goal is to create a mural at the Retirement Home in my mother's hometown, Câmpina, to inspire the elders to
be more positive and bring more creativity to the community. A mural is a "painting or other work of art executed directly
on a wall" (Oxford Dictionary). The goal is to attempt bringing the elders some of the things that brought them happiness
during their youth through art. According to PBS Art Studios: "Murals became powerful tools when cities and countries
were going through hard times". I wanted to relate this idea to my product as I want to help the elders have a brighter
outlook. On a personal level, my grandmother lives at the retirement home, and I would love knowing she has a piece of
art that I made to look at. The second part of my goal addresses the community, and inspiring them to be more creative.
Câmpina has parks, restaurants, cafés, but is lacking the colors that you would find in Bucharest. My goal is to add color
to the city, while inspiring children and teenagers to join art programs. The goal is highly challenging for me because

2
while I have painted many times, I have never painted something this big or based on someone else's wants or needs. The
goal will help me take art, a hobby, to a level I have not reached yet, pushing me out of my comfort zone.

Global Context

The project would be teaching me something about myself and my abilities, connecting me to my chosen Global
Context: Personal and Cultural Expression. Art is also said to be the expression of the artist, and I believe this to be true.
Every person expresses themselves differently in art, and even when they are commissioned by someone to paint
something specific, they put a little part of themselves in their work. The idea behind the mural comes from my interviews
with the elders (see Appendix H); therefore, it is an expression of who they are and what makes them happy. However, I
took their ideas and arranged them into the final form in a way that would be able to express their values while making it
an expression of my beliefs too.

Prior Knowledge

From as far back as I can remember, I have loved art and being creative. I remember drawing and coloring with
my grandparents, or making objects out of paper mache. Since starting pre-kindergarten there hasn't been a year that I
have not taken visual arts. In 2012, I attended a painting class to fill in my spare time. The course was enjoyable, and it
taught me many new art skills that I still use today. The class opened my eyes to the creative part of me, and I believe that
the course is what made me enjoy art. Since then, I have used art as a way to relax and destress. From the reasonably new
paintings (see Appendix A) that cover my bedroom walls to the filled-in notebooks of doodles, every single "piece of art"
is a treasured memory. Since I had a lot of connections with art growing up, I also have some existing knowledge about
color theory and how it can impact mood. I know that red in general symbolises anger and that blue can emote sadness.
However, this is very basic knowledge, that can be expanded further.

Research skills

Throughout my research process, I have used various sources to learn more about murals and color theory. Since I
was targeting my product at elders, I had to make sure that the colors I was using would not be harmful. This meant that I
had to talk to professionals that worked with the elders at the home. Due to this, most of my research came from
interviews with nurses, psychologists, and the elders. To evaluate my research, I chose examples from different types of
sources I used and evaluated them for their reliability and relevance (see Appendix B). In addition to the research, I also
had background information on the topic, which I used as a base. For some questions that I had, I chose to combine my
prior knowledge on the issue with internet research and with information from interviews. To make sure that I would be
able to do this, I was paraphrasing and synthesizing the information I was gathering (see Appendix C). All the sources
used were then transformed into MLA sources with the help of NoodleTools. During the process of researching, I had a
separate document where I made myself an action plan so that I could write down due dates that I should meet, along with
organizing my research and interviews in a way that would become useful. The research that was most useful came from
the interviews, as the final design is based on it.

Section B: Planning

Developing criteria

My main goal was to inspire the elders to be more outgoing and positive. To make sure this was going to be
achievable, I had to make sure I was catering to their needs (see Appendix D). Since the mural would be painted outside I
wanted to make sure that I was aware of my impact on the surrounding environment and that I was not disrupting too

3
much (see Appendix D). The scale of the mural was massive compared to any painting I had done before, which is why
one of my criteria related to being able to demonstrate an understanding of the art medium and the materials I was using
(see Appendix D). My primary material was exterior white paint, which I added colorants in to achieve my desired color.
The color was crucial in my project because different colors were going to have different impacts on the elders. I had to
make sure that I was using colors that would not darken their emotional and mental state. This understanding of color
made up my last success criteria (see Appendix D).

Planning and Recording

In the action plan I made, I made a section where I was able to create a timeline and set goals. I don't like being
late with anything, which made me stick to most of the self-set due dates. Looking at the timeline (see Appendix E), some
of the dates were kind of harsh, as I tried cramming all the research in. However, once I realized this, I was able to
reorganize and change the timeline to make it more productive. Aside from the personal timeline, I also made sure to meet
with my supervisor at least once every two weeks, but more often when needed. This allowed me to have made enough
progress to show my supervisor and get feedback on it. The information that I was sharing with my supervisor was also
being recorded in the process journal (see Appendix F) on ManageBac, which I updated weekly with what I had been
doing. In the process journal, I was able to include images, notes, and my next steps.

Self-Management skills

Until right before the Personal Project was introduced, I had an idea of what I wanted to do, but that changed
quickly once I started doing background research. Before reaching my final idea of painting a mural, I was very
indecisive. I went into the summer break thinking of making a cooking book; however, I realized I was not interested in
the topic. I spent the summer painting for fun and realized that I would be happier doing something related to art. Once I
discovered this, it was easier for me to start managing my time, but I had already lost a lot of the summer vacation, which
could have come in handy to use for research. The first month and a half after school started, I worked on getting all my
research done and meeting with my supervisor to check that I was on the right track. In November I started working on
my final product. I spent my weekends in Câmpina painting the mural, and the weekdays in Bucharest at school, doing
school work. This proved to be harder than I had expected, as it was very tiring. The struggle ended up improving my
organizational and time-management skills as I learned how to better organize my time in a way that I would be able to
complete all tasks by their due dates.

Section C: Taking Action

Creating the product

In order to achieve my goal I started the research process by inquiring into color theory. I had some idea of the
colors that would not accomplish my goal, but I wanted to get some formal research proving my point. Aside from
internet research, I also wanted the home psychologist to tell me what colors would be best for this specific group of
elders. After interviewing her, I talked to a group of elders about what makes them happy and about what their favorite
colors are. I did this because I wanted to base the color scheme of the painting on those colors, taking into consideration
what the psychologist had said. I then came up with a few ideas which I presented to the owner of the retirement home
and the psychologist; they picked the design that I ended up painting.

4
Halfway through November, I started painting the mural. The first day was spent painting a base to ensure that the
paint would stick to the existing exterior paint, a coat of white, and then drawing the people. The next day, I painted the
triangles, which made up the background of the mural. The next weekend, my goal was completing the mural. However,
the weather conditions were bad and I underestimated the amount of work, so I did not achieve this goal. That weekend, I
painted the children and started on the designs that are in the background. The week before an older man recommended I
paint a big sun, so it was the first design I painted. The next weekend, I went back to finish the mural, spending Saturday
painting the rest of the designs. On the 30th of November, I added an outline to the painting and signed my name in the
bottom left corner. In addition to painting my mural, I was recording the process both in my process journal and on
camera (see Appendix G).

Thinking skills

After researching color theory both through interviews and through secondary resources, I learned what range of
colors I should use. From a website named Color Wheel Pro, I learned that "Red is a very emotionally intense color. It
enhances human metabolism, increases respiration rate, and raises blood pressure." and "Black gives the feeling of
perspective and depth, but a black background diminishes readability." Since I wanted to have full credibility in my source
(see Appendix B), I fact-checked the information with the psychologist (see Appendix H) at the home, asking her about
what colors should be used. She agreed with the website, which strengthened my belief in the information. In addition to
researching murals and color theory, I also studied some examples of murals. Over my summer break travels, I saw some
murals painted on the sides of buildings or bridges, and I took pictures of these murals to have a broader range of existing

5
products to choose when analysing and getting inspired. By analyzing the existing products in terms of what made me like
or dislike them (see Appendix I), I was able to get a deeper understanding of what murals look like and how they should
look if they are to be considered successful. This later helped me come up with a design for the mural that would be
interesting but would also be successful in completing my goal.

Communication and Social skills

Due to my project having a specific audience group, I had to make sure that my research was focused on them. I
had to take interviews and talk to people I had never spoken to. Before the interviews, I did some background information
on the questions that I would be asking, as I wanted to be able to understand. I also had to talk in Romanian for the
interviews (see Appendix H) as that made it easier for them. I had to make sure that what I was going to paint was not
going to cause harm to the elders, making me cautious to all research. To be able to understand multiple perspectives, I
needed to talk to people from different groups. This meant I had to use a wider variety of communication and social skills;
I was not able to speak to the elders the same way I had to talk to the owner of the home. This made me more aware of
conversations in general and how important the audience is when you are trying to convey a message. Aside from the
interviews, I was also communicating with my supervisor, demonstrating online social skills in the form of emails and in
our conversations. For me, it was crucial to share with my supervisor what I was doing, even when I was not able to meet
with her, as I value her feedback. I used Google Calendar to send invites for our meetings; this helps show both my
organizational skills and the social skills that went into the project.

Section D: Reflecting

Evaluating the product against my criteria

I believe that the outcome of my product meets the 7/8 bands for most of the criteria I set (see Appendix D).
According to a second interview, taken a month after completing the product, with the psychologist (see Appendix J),
there was a change in the outlook, acceptance, and openness of the elders that had been going outside.
For the first strand of my criteria - (i) Demonstrating understanding of environmental awareness and form - I think
that I would place myself in the top bracket as I was able to demonstrate consistent awareness of the environment by
cleaning up after myself when painting, and through using paints that were specifically for the outdoors. The mural also is
integrated inside the given area of two by three meters. I think that the theme is uplifting as it centers around family. The
mural uses motifs of nature, tying it into the surroundings, making it not appear too out of the ordinary.
In the second strand of my criteria - (ii) Demonstrating understanding of the use of color to convey emotions - I
think that I would again place myself in the 7/8 bracket as I demonstrated a developed knowledge of color and its
capability to convey emotion. After doing my research about color theory, I was able to gain an understanding of how
color can impact and change feelings. Because of this, I was then able to use almost no red and black, which were not
recommended by the psychologist. The only time I used one of the colors was to create a pale shade of grey for the outline
and mountains.
In the third strand of my criteria - (iii) Demonstrating understanding of the wants of the elders - I again would
place myself in the top range. I think that through my interviews with the elders, I was able to gain an intricate
understanding of the simple things that make them happy and integrate these values into the mural. The theme of the
mural is chosen by the topics that the elders said made them happy; the sky, the sun, plants, trees, and family, all of which
are included. I also used their favorite colors, which were mainly green, yellow, and blue. Of course, to also add some
variety to the colors in the background, I used other colors such as pink and purple, which the psychologist said would not
cause harm.
In the fourth and final strand of my criteria - (iv) Demonstrating understanding of the use of materials - I would
give myself a 6/7 because the one difference between the 5/6 bracket and the 7/8 bracket is the use a mask to avoid

6
inhaling paint fumes, and I did not wear masks even though I had them with me. However, I was outdoors, there was
proper ventilation, and the paint that I had bought was a good paint with few toxins that were being released. In terms of
the materials used, I think I demonstrated a wide-range understanding as I bought a base color and several colorants that
could be mixed into the white to create the desired colors. This way I was not wasting paint. Leftover paint was poured
into cups that were sealed and used to paint patterns or other art projects. I think I showed a great understanding of
brushes and what sizes work best, switching between rollers and different shaped brushes to paint in the details and the
backgrounds.
If I were to redo my project, I would improve my product by adding more variety to the backgrounds and putting
in equal attention to all the background clusters. Even though each background had a distinct pattern, there were some
repeating topics, specifically flowers. For the second modification, equal attention, I feel like some of the backgrounds
have more detail than others. For example, the butterflies all have different designs to make each of them unique,
however, the top left corner is not executed as well, and you can tell that not as much thought went into that design.

Knowledge and understanding of my topic and Global Context

In the time spent researching, I learned a vast amount of information about murals, their origin, and how they are
used to communicate and create a feeling or response in the viewer. I grew up seeing murals painted on walls but had
never given it much meaning. Now I know that murals are used to communicate a message to a community. My message
within the mural: happiness can be found within what you have, and family is always there with you even when they are
not physically there. I tried to and succeeded in expressing happiness and positivity, not only through the image but
through the use of color and my attitude towards the painting. Despite different experiences, the elders and I belong to the
same culture. We all have one value in common, family. Since they expressed their love for their families and that their
families are the ones that make them happy, I chose to paint that, as that way, they will feel represented by the mural too.

Development as an IB learner

One thing I have learned from the process of the Personal Project is how present the IB learner profile
characteristics are in what we do as IB students and how they are all linked. I had to apply most of the IB learner profiles
to a greater or lower extent if I was going to complete a successful product.
I think that the three IB learner profiles that can be seen in the most considerable depth in my work are Caring,
Knowledgeable, and Communicator. The caring profile was one that I demonstrated in great detail because my whole
project was about helping and bringing happiness to others. Throughout the project, I was going through challenges to
make sure that I was completing the mural and meeting their wishes. I did this by adapting to suggestions that I got during
the creation of the mural, and asking for the elder's feedback. The intention, apart from completing my Personal Project,
was to make sure the mural would bring them positivity. The second learner profile, knowledgeable, was demonstrated
throughout the whole process. To be able to achieve my goal, I had to know what I was doing, by having an understanding
of colors, murals, and the audience. This knowledge was gained through interviews and research and applied in the mural.
However, the knowledgeable trait was not only demonstrated in terms of research and artistic knowledge. I believe that I
learned a lot about myself during the process. I learned that: I like helping people, seeing people happy makes me happy, I
enjoy putting paint down no matter the surface, I don't like heights, I am more adaptable than I thought. I learned that if I
want to do something, I will, no matter the challenges. This brings me to the last learner profile that I think was
demonstrated, Communicator. Being able to communicate in different situations is an important skill. Throughout the
interviews, I realized how important being able to change your tone and vocabulary is. When I was talking to the
psychologist and the owner, I had to have an academic, professional vocabulary. However, with the elders I had to use
simple vocabulary and keep it short so that they would understand. I had to talk to all these people in Romanian, which
sometimes made it harder for me to explain myself, but I managed. Overall I was able to approach these different
situations and come out of them having understood and informed the other person involved adequately.

Appendix C: Synthesized Research

Topic Synthesis

What are murals? From my research I discovered that every major civilization or group of people have created murals all
the way back to cavemen. Murals used to be used as ways to tell stories but modern murals are a way to
communicate specific messages to a group of people. Bright colors, interesting designs and large scales
are what make murals interesting and eye catching.

Color Theory → understanding color From my research I learned that red and black are both colors that have a lot of negative impacts if not
and emotion/meaning used correctly. For example, I learned that red can raise blood pressure and increase respiration rate.

Materials and techniques From my research I learned that the most common mural technique is called Fresco, it is also the oldest
method but it consists of applying wet paint to surfaces. Most murals are painted with exterior paint, or
some are painted with acrylic paint that is then covered in varnish.
