TASK:
 In answering this Assignment, use the standard Conditions of Contract FIDIC
(Construction) 1999 First Edition (The Red Book) as a guide.
 Clearly state the assumptions made in the answer.

You are the Contractor’s Representative for a project which involves laying of Ductile Iron
pipes. You studied the relevant contract documents on 5 January for the purpose of
planning the first 100m of pipe laying works. The works, among other things, include
excavation of the trench, laying the pipe, constructing the bedding around the pipe and
back filling.

During studying the documents, you noticed that certain details of the bedding type are
missing which requires the Engineers advice.
1. Describe what action you would take identifying important contractual
requirements.

You received an advice from the Engineer on 20 January, however, you noticed that some
further details about the bedding type are required and this requires the Engineer’s advice.
2. Describe what action you would take identifying important contractual
requirements.

The specification states that the type of material to be excavated is sandy soil except the
last 10m, which is rock.
3. During construction of the trench an abandoned concrete culvert was found.
Describe what action you would take identifying important contractual
requirements.
4. During construction of the last 10m it was found the material that excavated was
the same soil despite the specification states rock as aforesaid. Describe what action
you would take identifying important contractual requirements. Describe what
action the Engineer should take in this case identifying important contractual
requirements.
5. What are the possible events under which the Contractor would be entitled to an
extension of time and associated costs.
6. Describe what actions you would take in order to secure the Contractor’s such
entitlements.

METHOD:

Students are required to carry out a literature review to answer to the above task and
answer shall not exceed 2000 words. Font – Calibri size 11
 A proper form of citation must be followed, and all authorities used must be cited.

 Bibliography should be attached along with the assignment.


 Student shall work individually.
 The report shall be word processed on one side of A4 paper and neatly presented.
 Students must submit a hard copy of the assignment to the Department.
 Late submissions are subjected to a penalty of ten (10) marks for the first delayed
week. Thereafter, submissions will not be accepted and zero marks will be given
