South African music:

The music of South Africa is really fascinating. From the colonies until today, this
music has recreated itself, combining local rhythms and sounds with those that came
from outside the country.

At the beginning of the 17th century, slaves imported and adapted musical instruments
and ideas from the West. For example, the Khoi-Khoi made the ramkie, which is a
guitar with 3 and sometimes 4 strings, used to link songs from their culture and western
folklore.

Typical musical genres of South Africa

In 1897, Professor Enoch Sontonga wrote the anthem. God bless Africa, which is now
the national anthem of democratic South Africa.

The missionaries created a great influence on the gospel movement or also called
spiritual music, and it is widely heard and produced in this part of the world and many
artists within the country make this music, coming to have gold or platinum records.

Today there is music from genres such as Kwaito, Afrikaans and Metal, rapidly growing
in the country. There are also many artists from there and they make varied music,
keeping the rule of using African music together with western music.

Die Antwoord ("The Answer" in Afrikaans), is the most important band in South Africa
today. Avant-garde, extravagant and original, they mix styles like hip-hop, rap, rave and
zef with pop and electronic music.
