Age

1. The sum of ages of the Father and Son is 50 years. When the ages of the son
will be equal to the present age of the father, the sum of their ages will be 102
years. Find the age of Father and Son?
Solution:
Let, age of Father be x years and age of Son = (50-x) years.
Difference of age between father and son = x- (50-x) = 2x-50
According to the question,
Father’s age + age difference + Son’s age = Total age
x+ (2x-50) + x= 102
Or, 3x-50+ x = 102
Or, 3x+x = 102+50
Or, 4x = 152
x = 38
Father’s age = 38 years and son’s age = 50-38 = 12 years.
Ans: 38 years and 12 years.

2. Ten years hence, the respective ratio between Simmi’s age and Farzana’s
age will be 7: 9. Two years ago, the respective ratio between Simmi’s age and
Farzana’s age was 1: 3. If Rocky is 4 years older to his sister Farzana, what is
Rocky’s present age?
Solution:
Let, present age of Simmi and Farzana be S years and F years.
So, Rocky’s age = (F +4) years
1st condition,
=
Or, 9S+90 = 7F +70
Or, 9S-7F = 70-90
9S – 7F = -20 ..... (i)
2nd condition,
=
Or, 3S -6 = F-2
Or, 3S –F = 6-2
3S –F = 4 .... (ii)
(i) -3×(ii) =>
-7F+3F = -20 -12
Or, -4F = -32
F=8
Farzana’s age = 8 years.
Rocky’s age = (8+4) years = 12 years. (Ans.)

3. The age of father 10 years ago was thrice the age of his son. Ten years
hence, father's age will be twice that of his son. The ratio of their present ages
is?
Solution:
Let, the ages of father and son 10 years ago be 3x and x years respectively.
Present age of father = (3x+10) years and son = (x+10) years.
According to the question,
(3x + 10) + 10 = 2[(x + 10) + 10]
Or, 3x+20 = 2(x+20)
Or, 3x+ 20 = 2x+40
Or, 3x-2x = 40-20
x = 20.
Father’s present age = (3×20+10) = 70 years
and Son’s present age = (20+10) = 30 years.
The required ratio = Father: Son = 70: 30 = 7: 3. (Ans.)

4. Samir is twice as old as Babul was two years ago. If the difference between
their ages is 2 years, how old is Samir now?
Solution:
Let, present age of Samir be x years. So, Babul’s age = x-2
As per question,
x = 2(x-2-2) Or, x = 2(x-4) Or, x = 2x -8
Or, 2x –x = 8 x=8
5. The sum of the present ages of a father and his son is 60 years. Six years
ago, father’s age was five times the age of the son. After 6 years, son’s age will
be:
Solution:
Let, the present age of son and father be x and (60 -x) years respectively.
According to the question,
{(60 - x) – 6} = 5(x - 6)
Or, 60-x-6 = 5x-30
Or, 54-x = 5x-30 Or, 5x+x = 54+30
Or, 6x = 84 x = 14.
Son's age after 6 years = (x+ 6) = 14+6 = 20 years. (Ans.)
