Syllabus: MGMT 502 – Business Essentials
1. Course Summary
1.1 Purpose of Class:
This course will lay a broad foundation of understanding the processes of business
principles globally and for a varied population of students who work in businesses of all
kinds including the IT and IA fields. The course covers the latest changes in
Information Technology for Business, including computer-aided manufacturing (CAM),
applications software, and recent ethical issues arising from IT. Real-life business
examples are added throughout the course that reinforces the business principles.

1.3 Course Objectives:
Students who successfully complete this class will be able to:
1. Explain the importance of the economic environment to business. Analyze the
factors used to evaluate the performance of an economic environment.
2. Describe each of the common legal and political issues among nations that affect
international business: quotas, tariffs, subsidies, and business practice laws, etc.
3. Companies with different business strategies are best served by having different
operations capabilities. Demonstrate how this works.
4. Evaluate leadership to decision making by discussing rational and behavioral
perspectives.
5. Identify the 5 “forces” that constitute the external marketing environment to meet its
organizational goals.
6. Aside from the impact of Information Technology has on the business world,
identify the threats and risks IT poses for businesses.
7. Discuss some of the institutions and activities in international banking structures
and global finance.
1.4 SCANS Objectives
SCANS is an acronym for Secretary’s Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills. The
committee, appointed by the National Secretary of Labor in 1990, created a list of skills
and competencies that continue to be a valuable resource for individuals developing
