Assignment #2: Shear stresses in beam bending June 9th /2020

Individual work

As a rule for all homework to come, you have to write a short comment on the results in each
problem. Does the result make sense? Why you think it is correct? If possible, compare with a
very simple situation, or with other similar case.

1. A steel welded box girder having the

dimensions shown in the figure has to transmit
a vertical shear force V=360K pounds.
Determine the shearing stresses at sections a, b
and c. Check that the sectional inertia Ic is
45,000 in4. and the value of the radius of
gyration, kzz.

2. A beam has a cross-sectional area in the form of an isosceles triangle for

which the base b is equal to one-half its height h.
i) Using calculus and the formula for shear stress analysis deduced in class,
determine the location of the maximum shearing stress caused by a vertical
shear force V. Sketch the manner in which the shearing stress varies across
the section.
ii) If b=3 in., h=6 in., and max is to be determined for steel with a safety
factor of 2.0 (review rules for ship construction of a classification society),
determine the maximum vertical shear V that this section may carry.

3. A beam is loaded so that the moment diagram for

it varies as shown in the figure. Find the maximum
shearing stress in the glued joint.
Group work

Shear stresses in SS beam bending

1. Objective: Observe the influence of shear stresses to joint different segments of the section of
a simply supported beam under concentrated load.

2. Process to reach the objective: Propose a question which is equivalent to the objective of this
experiment, and develop a process to reach the objective. This is not the procedure to develop the
experiment, which is composed of several steps.

3. Variables to be reported: name them, and explain how they are to be reported.

4. Calculations: compare the stiffness (capacity to resist deflection) if you have two sticks un
and glued together. You may change the number of glued points between the sticks.

5. Report: Must be no longer than 4 pages, in IEEE format. It must include: Summary, theoretical
introduction, process to reach objective and experimental procedure, summary of data and
calculations, analysis of results, and, conclusions and recommendations. For this last point, please
do not write “it is recommended to read carefully or to place the load with care …”; after you
have answered the proposed question in 2., there are new questions that have appeared and you
recommend for future experimental work.

Team work: the team must agree on a certain plan to complete this assignment which include
answer to points 2., 3. and 4., and must meet with the Assistants (Eng. Isaac, Eng. JoséM or
Tadea) to explain it. This meeting will take place during office hours on Thursday 11th or Monday
15th.

You have to report the number of hours employed to solve each one of the problems.
