Q1. What led Mahatma Gandhi to call for complete withdrawal of British from India?
Ans –The failure of Cripps mission and the impact of World War II on India led to widespread discontent.
Congress passed the Quit India resolution in July 1942 demanding immediate transfer of power to

Ans –He called for a non – violent mass struggle on the widest possible scale through ut India. To the
people he gave the slogan Do or Die.

Q3. How did Indians respond to the call for Quit India?
Ans – The administration came to a halt when people observed hartals and led demonstrations and sang
national songs and shouted slogans.
People from various sections – students, workers and peasants took part in large numbers.
Many leaders like JP Narayan, Aruna Asaf Ali, Ram Manhar Lohia and women such as Matangini
Hazra from Bengal, Kanaklata Barua from Assam and Rama Devi fro Orissa took part.
