1) A particle of charge q and mass m, which is moving in a one-dimensional harmonic

potential of frequency , is subject to a weak electric field E in the x-direction.
(a) Find the exact expression for the energy.
(b) Calculate the energy to first order and 2nd order correction in energy. (6)

2) Find the wave functions of two systems of identical, noninteracting particles: the first
consists of two bosons and the second of two spin 1/2 fermions. (5)

3) Calculate the first order correction to 𝑬𝟎𝟑 for a particle in one dimensional box with
walls at x=0 and x=L, if the perturbation is

(5)
4) How does the three -fold degenerate energy 𝑬 = 𝟑ħ𝝎𝟎 of two dimensional of harmonic

oscillator separate due to perturbation

(hint: article 13.2 time independent degenerate perturbation theory for two dimensional
harmonic oscillator, Liboff ) (5)

5) A particle is initially in its ground state in an infinite one-dimensional potential box

with sides at x =0 and x = a. If the wall of the box at x = a is suddenly moved to x =10a,
calculate the probability of finding the particle in the third excited (n = 4) state of the
new box. (4)
