Drugs are materials meant for use in the analysis, cure, mitigation, therapy, or restriction
of disease. Drugs are taken different forms like solids, semisolids, liquids, suspensions,
emulsions, etc., for systemic or confined healing activity.

Drugs product performance is described as the transfer of the drug substance from the
drug product unless for local drug action or drug penetration into the plasma for systemic
healing activity.

Concerted drug or xenobiotic transport happens when the transport of a mixture is aided
across both membrane regions of a polarized cell by membrane transporters. Concerted
drug transport tells that the carriers on the two domains pass drugs in the same direction
(Fig. 12-12). In this case, Madin—Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells were cultured in a
specific device known as Transwell. A Transwell is a porous supporter composed of a
polymer and is employed to grow cells as a uniform monolayer of polarized cell
membranes (apical and basolateral) and functional cell—tight cell junctions.
