ESPLV BUCKET ELEVATOR WITH DOUBLE LATERAL

CHAINS (FOR LARGE CAPACITY)
ESPLV – Continuous bucket high-speed TYPE CODING
elevator, with double chains connected to bucket The identification of the type of elevator:
sides. This bucket elevator can also be used at Example:
medium speeds, whereby part of the material ESPLV B1xB2-D-C
is discharged by flowing onto the back of the Center to center distance
preceding bucket. Elevator with chains driven
by toothed wheels. The main features of the Pitch diameter of wheels
elevator include the following:
Buckets dimension
¾¾ Standard dimensions (i.e. bucket width in
conformity to DIN specifications starting
from 315 mm, with increased width for larger
elevators.
¾¾ High-capacity buckets with extended
sides in the upper section (buckets in the
discharge phase) so as to contain the
material arriving from the bucket behind.
The sides include drilled projections for
connection to the chains.
¾¾ Drive wheels with interchangeable toothed
segments for driving the chains.
¾¾ Toothed return wheels.
¾¾ Link chains with side plates, pins and fixed
bushings. One side of the chain features
some increased-size drilled plates for
connection to the buckets.
¾¾ Tangential feed inlet on idle station.
¾¾ Tangential discharge outlet on drive station.
¾¾ Standard tensioning system featuring
parallel tensioning by counterweight.
Alternatively, a hydraulic tensioning system

Type of discharge: tangential centrifugal (and

partly gravity discharge at medium speeds).

ESPLV- SUGGESTED SPEED V = 0,9 ÷ 1,6 mps

Thanks to the presence of continuous buckets,
the back sides can be used as chutes for the
material being discharged, the bucket elevators
can be operated at lower speeds (up to 0.5 m/
sec) which are suitable for lifting medium-sized
lumps of material.
Img. AG
DRIVE STATION
On ESPLV elevators, the drive shaft is equipped
with a pair of toothed wheels for driving the
chains. Each wheel comprises toothed segments
that are hardened in the zone coming into
contact with the chain, and bolted to the hub
so that they can be easily interchanged. The
adjacent picture shows a head section with two Img. AH
drive assemblies for a high-capacity elevator. Drive sprockets

INTERMEDIATE BODY
The casing of ESPLV bucket elevators is always
formed by single casing sections, as the large
buckets characterizing this type of elevator
ensure little space remains between the up
run and down run: the buckets also occupy the
middle section of the elevator, as the chains
are anchored to the bucket sides. However,
an intermediate vertical wall divides the single
casing section into two distinct parts to ensure
adequate rigidity.

Img. AI

BOOT STATION
The standard tensioning system is the parallel
tensioning version, although these elevators
are often equipped with a hydraulic tensioning
system, as shown in the picture. This system
design allows easy adjusting – in necessary,
with different parameters on the two sides of
the bucket elevator - the proper tension values
required for operating the bucket elevator
efficiently.

Regardless of the relatively low speeds and mild Dedusting
centrifugal force, peripheral discharge is possible
thanks to the continuous buckets, the back sides
act as chutes for the material being discharged.
These buckets can also operate at higher
speeds than those indicated.
DRIVE STATION
On ESP bucket elevators, the drive shaft is
equipped with a pair of toothed wheels that drive
the chains.
Each wheel comprises toothed segments that
are hardened in the zone that comes into contact
with the chain, and are bolted to the hub to
facilitate replacement.

INTERMEDIATE BODY
In order to withstand possible horizontal loads
(wind and seismic events), the bucket elevator
intermediate body must include suitable bracings
that transfer these loads to the adjacent rigid
structures. These brackets may resemble the
structure indicated in the adjacent picture,
which shows a type of bracing for anchoring the
elevator to a rigid vertical wall.

it through the drive assembly and discharges
raised material through gravity from a central
outlet. It consists of a sturdy structure with
brackets for shaft supports, an upper cover

CENTRAL DISCHARGE OUTLET

On low-speed bucket elevators, material is
discharged through gravity in the central zone of
the head section, which includes an appropriate
hopper located under the drive shaft. A suitable
element protects the hopper against wear
caused by the material being discharged.
Owing to the special shape of the buckets and
the relatively low speeds, material discharge
occurs when the chains mesh with the first
quarter of the wheels, when the bucket reaches
its highest point.

The adjacent picture shows a bucket elevator

with service platform on the drive station that can
be accessed through a ladder mounted on the
bucket elevator casing.
Both the service platform and access ladder are
optional extras supplied with the bucket elevator,
and must be adapted to the specific needs of the
plant.
The ladder comprise a series of landings that
are alternately placed on two opposite sides of
the bucket elevator casing and anchored to it.
The landings are connected by flights of steps
flanking the other two sides of the casing so as
to form a spiral stair around the bucket elevator.
The composition, workloads and design of the
components comprising these structures can
be custom-made to meet specific customer
specifications, or may comply with our standards
adapted to specific cases.

This type of staircase is necessary when there

are no buildings or similar structures near the
elevator equipped with suitable stairs or lift to
access the top of the bucket elevator.

DRIVE STATION
These bucket elevators can lift large-sized lumps
of material (even up to 400 mm), thanks to direct
loading into special “pocket” buckets without any
dredging.
The picture shows the drive station of an ETR
bucket elevator during installation. Note how the
“pocket” buckets are joined together and ensure
gravity discharge in the central zone of the drive
station.

BOOT STATION
Lower section of the bucket elevator comprising
the central feed inlet. The special feed system
configured at the centre of the boot station,
allows for directly feeding the buckets without
dredging thanks to a suitable hopper that
protects the return shaft. In this way, even
exceptionally large-sized lumps of material can
be lifted.

TOOTHED DRIVE WHEELS

In the below table (valid for all types of toothed p2

wheels), the values for the Fz factor refer to the

no. of toothed segments (Z) on the wheel for
calculating the primitive diameter Dp.

p1
Non-whole values for Z (e.g. 5.5, 6.5, 7.5, etc.)
indicate wheels with a double number of teeth
than that indicated (Z=7.5 corresponds to a
wheel that actually has 15 teeth): the chain’s

pitch “p2” meshes with a pair of teeth, therefore
the chain will mesh with offset teeth at every turn,
as the latter are odd-numbered. This doubles
the lifetime of the teeth. The chains that can
be paired with “p2”-type wheels are those with
longer pitch (see comparison with “p1” shown in Img. CE
the adjacent picture.)

Unfortunately, this type of belt is very elastic and
tends to stretch during operation, therefore it is
normally used on small elevators.

The resulting mesh is highly resistant to the
concentrated stress generated by the buckets.
The rubber coating on both sides of the belt has
a minimum thickness of 3 mm.
This type of belt is necessarily used on large
elevators owing to its high breaking load,
although it is also frequently used on medium-
sized elevators for its low-stretch characteristics.

the belt, therefore the latter does not require any punching which
would cause dam-age by cutting some of the cables of the steel
structure.
Besides the screws, the fixing system comprises a special nut, a
lock nut and large-diameter washer for distributing the load over a
wide area.

SADDLES [8]
Buckets on medium-large bucket elevators (from EVR 500
upwards) are equipped with a series of metal mounting brackets 8
that are welded to the rear side of the buckets. Thanks to their
shape, the saddles separate the bucket from the belt and enclose
the head of the bolted fixing unit connecting the buckets to the
belt. This gap between bucket and belt helps to protect the
latter when relatively hot material is lifted, as exposure to high
temperatures accelerates ageing of the rubber causing it to
harden prematurely.

SPECIAL VERSION

POSITIVE DISCHARGE
For this type of discharge, the chains are diverted from their
vertical position by two pairs of wheels positioned in the lower
section of the drive station.
In this way, material can be discharged peripherally even with
relatively low speeds (below 0.9 m/sec), as the buckets tip over
completely above the discharge zone.
This version can be applied to certain double-strand elevators
(such as EVD and ESP elevators) by positioning the chains to the
side of the buckets, which must have a special shape.

Img. DA

ANTI-ROLLBACK DEVICE ON DRIVE SHAFT

Safety regulations of certain users require that the backstop
device to be foreseen on the drive shaft, the final component
of the kinetic chain, rather than on the first gearbox shafts. This
ensures that any component fitted upstream of the drive shaft is
protected against possible seizures. This additional safety device
implies a greater cost due to the size of the device, which must
withstand a far greater torque.

SPECIAL TOOTHED WHEELS FOR ELD BUCKET

ELEVATOR
When the centre-to-centre distance of ELD bucket elevators
exceeds 40 m, the smooth-ring wheels of the drive station are
replaced by toothed wheels, such as those shown in the adjacent
picture, to prevent the chain from slipping from the wheel.

INSTRUMENTATION

Most commonly used instruments for bucket elevators.

SPEED SENSOR (1)

Device installed on the tensioning shaft that signals whether the
elevator is operating (motor activated) or not; also emits an alarm 2
buzzer if the motor is activated while the relative sensor does not
signal any shaft rotation.

LEVEL INDICATOR (2)

Device installed on the boot station to signal abnormal levels of
material due to overfeeding or other possible causes.

END-STROKE SENSOR
Device installed on the boot station to signal the end of tension
stroke.
