Best References for For the IStructE and HKIE Examinations!

1.    Structural Engineer’s Pocket Book by Fiona Cobb

This pocket book is like a bible for structural engineers. It’s small. So it saves time. Unlike
your average USD160 college textbook, it is not expensive. It is a very comprehensive
structural engineering reference guide that contains the most useful and basic rules of
thumb, material information and properties, and design formulas. This book can used by
students and even professional structural engineers. Best of all, if you ever think of taking
the IStructE examination, this book is a must read!

2. Reinforced Concrete Design by Mosley and Bungee

Mosley mainly focuses on detailed design calculations in his book. There are a plethora of
examples and explanations that help the reader understand complex detailed design
methods. These examples help to explain structural theories in depth and provide a
straightforward understanding to the practical methods of concrete detailed design.

3. ICE Manual of Structural Design: Buildings

This manual is very very detailed. Unlike the pocket book, it goes through concepts, detail
by detail. However, since there are so many details, there are many illustrations that explain
these details and some of structural engineering’s very complicated theories and concepts.
One of this book’s special features is the case studies and issues that current professional
structural engineers face today, such as risk management, computation analysis and
design, and tolerances.
