SUGGESTIONS FOR PREPARATION OF DESIGN BRIEF

1. INTRODUCTION TO DESIGN

This shall include the theme or the specialization that has been chosen for the particular design.
This shall be in line with the University’s syllabus or in line with the school’s design thought
process. This could be sustainability, heritage, contemporary etc.

2. OBJECTIVES OF THE DESIGN

This SHALL NOT be a copy / paste component from the University’s syllabus but rather a precise
and concise writing based on the understanding of the faculty so that it can easily be passed on
to the students. For example, if the objective in the syllabus states “To adopt a trans-disciplinary
approach in the design”, the same shall be rewritten / rephrased as “To blend / integrate
architectural design with theory and theory cum studio subjects”.

3. CONTENT OF THE DESIGN

This MUST include the various principles and aspects that are expected to come out of the
literature studies and live case studies. Some examples could be understanding human
behavior, built form – open space relationships using Figure Ground Analysis (for lower
semesters) and Nolli Map (for higher semesters), focus on BMCT.

4. PROPOSED DESIGN PROJECTS

This shall include the two projects in a nutshell with no detailed description. Example,
“Architectural Design of an Auditorium with banquets and plenary halls. The proposed design
shall adhere to the principles of sustainability and shall have the site in Whitefield, Bangalore.
The auditorium shall also have …………………….. amenities”.

5. DETAILED BRIEF OF EACH PROJECT

a. This shall have an introductory part about the project and what the design intends to
achieve towards the end of the semester
b. Site Description
c. Expected Design Process and Considerations
6. READINGS

This is one of the most missed out components in a design brief. While the design projects are
chosen, it is imperative to choose appropriate reading materials that may include but not
limited to journal articles, books, internet links, processes and procedures and guide the
students to read and explore more about the given design. This will also help the students to
approach the design in their own unique ways. This shall be treated at par with the existing live
and literature case studies.

7. CASE STUDIES

This is to ensure that the chosen studies are in line with the chosen project and that
appropriateness of case studies is intact.
