Chapter 2

Review of Related Literature

• This is the main component of Chapter 2
• Literature is a published idea, facts or
knowledge by a different author. Literature
used in thesis writing may be in the form of
Journals, Manuscripts and published books.
• Why is reviewing literature important?
• To check the relevance of your study if any
idea in your study was already conducted by
others and shall be your basis on how you
undergo your study
What is the purpose of chapter 2
• Chapter 2 shares literatures and ideas that
relates to your topic
• Therefore, it must show vast information so
that the reader of your thesis will understand
the different ideas you are aiming for your
study
• TIP: the literatures you will be using does not
necessarily mean that you have to search the
exact same study
Where do you look for literatures?
• Online sources
• Libraries
• Thesis archives
• My best choice is online sources, as it is
readily accessible and has a wide selection
What are the contents of the
chapter 2
• Review of related literature
• Theoretical Framework
• Conceptual Framework
How do your start looking for
related literature?
• Sample title: A proposed Biophilic design
hospital in Naga city Cebu
• How do we search for literatures related to
this? Do we look for literatures specifically for
adaptive re-use hospital designs? The answer
is NO.
• When looking for a related literature, you are
not required to look for an exact study with the
same idea.
• You will instead use KEYWORDS
Online literature
• I would highly recommend SCIENCEDIRECT as a
source for literature as it is a verified site and has
reliable journals and manuscripts
• What you need to do is open the site and just type
your KEYWORDS
• And be amazed at how many topics you will see that
are related to your study
• Click any topic that interests you and read them and
get any phrase or idea that is mentioned that you
think is related to your study
• In each keyword choose a minimum of 3 literatures
How to write your related
literatures
• Each keyword will serve as a general topic,
then all of the idea and phrases that you have
taken in your related literature shall be its
content.
• Therefore when creating a review of related
literature you will be making paragraphs of
ideas that explain the keyword
Biophilic Architecture
Biophilic design is a relatively new term but has already been practiced
before during the roman times as written in the Ten books of architecture (1). Due
to its practicality and its ways on mitigating the impacts of the building to its
environment, it has been widely recognized and continuosly practiced in the 21 st
century. (2)
Biophilic design is an approach in environmental preservation that uses
nature to enhance the users’ experience. And according to Zhong et al., the
Buildings impact is 40% of the overall environmental damage. Therefore
mitigating environmental impacts by using biophilic design in architecture is a
great contribution. (1)
There are several benefits of using biophilic design in architecture,
according to Aristizzabal et al., immersive application of biophilic design can
improve cognitive performance, reduce stress and improve their productivity(3) .
And according to Jamshidi et al. in a hospital, there are different states of a human
being that is greatly affected by nature related environment namely physiological
state, Pain, length of stay, sleep, stress, anxiety, fear, satisfaction. Al l of these states
are recorded to have positive reponse when exposed to nature (4)
Keywords
• Keywords are used to dissect your topic/study into several ideas.
• Sample title: A proposed Biophilic design hospital in Naga city Cebu
• To be able to make keywords, try to choose any word that would be related
to your overall title not the exact title
• Choose atleast 5 keywords/phrases
• Ex.
• -Hospital design
• -Biophilic architecture
• -Healing architecture
• -Healthy architecture
• -modern hospital
• Instead of using the exact title look for words or phrases that are related
• These keywords will act as “tags” when you search
Review of literature usually looks
like this
