Zeta potential :
Zeta potential is the charge that develops at the interface between a solid and its
liquid medium simply it is known as surface charge.

It is measured in Millivolts.

Effect of zeta potential on gene delivery systems :

The effect of zp on gene delivery gives best results when the positively charged
surface of nanoparticles are produced. It shows targeted action of drug, specific
target binding, complexation when compared to that of negatively surface charged
particles.so that positively surface charged particles are mostly preferred for
effective delivery and action.

Effect of zp on macrophage uptake :

The large size and volume of nanoparticals cannot be controlled it causes
embolism. The smaller particles sizes with slightly negative charge can be
controlled easily and these are most preferred system it shows the desired effect.
The large size and highly charged particles are easily recognized by Murine
macrophages and causes phagocytosis.

Effect of zp on immunogenicity of nanoparticles :

Charges present on the surface of the nanoparticles produce stimulation effect on
immune response. Negative charged liposomes are more immunostimulant when
compared to that of zwitteronic ones. Protamine which is known as cationic
polymer coated on liposomes shows positive response on immunogenicity.

Effect of zp on ocular drug delivery system :

Positive charge zp shows effective action on ocular drug delivery.positive charge
shows better action when compared to negative charged particles. The charge
present on the mucosa of conjunctiva and anionic mucin is negative charge. So this
positive charge systems interact with this negatively charged organs and forms
nanoplexes and adhere to the conjunctiva and mucin and shows prolonged action
by opening or loosing the tight junctions.

Effect of zp on the uptake of nanoparticles from the gut :
The particle size, surface charge and physicochemical properties are responsible
for the uptake of nanoparticles from the gut. Cationic charged antigen particles are
taken up more vigorously from the gut when compared to that of non modified
forms. The electrostatic interaction is produced in the mucin of the intestine when
the positively charged particles interact with negatively charged sialic acid and
fucose residues.

Effect of zp on pharmacokinetics :
Particle size and surface charge is very essential for the bio-distribution and
pharmacokinetics. Nanoemulsions with negative charge shows faster clearance
when compared to that of neutral and positively charged particles.some studies
shows that the increase in diameter and positive charge of liposomes shows the
faster clearance when given through injection site after 2hrs. Positively charged
nanoceria shows the better protein adsorption when compared to that of negatively
charged nanoceria.

Effect of zp on controlled drug release :

The Invitro drug release is controlled by the pH,disolubility and zp of the
material.Negatively charged drugs incorporated in the films will affect the
physicochemical properties of the drug and the polymer. At lower charge and
loading capacities it shows effective action. Another method that layer- by-layer
method has shown that improved biocompatability and targeted release of drug
based on electrostatic layer-by-layer adsorption on oppositely charged substrate.
