NOTES FOR GUIDANCE ON

ROUTING OF TRANSCO TRANSMISSION PIPELINES

SCOPE

This note provides guidance for the routing of Transco above 7 bar pipelines within the UK in rural
(R type) areas.

GUIDANCE

1. Above 7 bar Transco pipelines should be routed in R type areas in accordance with the
recommendations of the latest edition of IGE/TD/1.

2. In addition where a pipeline passes within 4 Building Proximity Distances (BPD) (as defined in
IGE/TD/1) of a sensitive development (see para.4 below) then the additional design precautions for
Type S areas outlined in Section 6.8.5 of Edition 3 of IGE/TD/1 should be taken. These additional
precautions require that the stress level within the pipeline should be limited to 0.3, unless the pipeline
wall thickness is equal to or greater than 19.1 mm in which case the stress level may increase up to 0.5.

3. The length of lower stress pipe adjacent the sensitive development (as defined in para 2 above) should
extend so that no part of the higher stress level pipe is nearer than 4 BPD from any edge of the
development: the edge being defined as the outside wall of the permanently occupied buildings (not the
land boundary).

4. Sensitive developments are defined as follows:-

- Developments for vulnerable people such as homes for the elderly, schools, hospitals;

- Any very large facilities of greater than 5,000 m² gross floor space or more than 1,000 people out of
doors, such as spectator stadiums, theme parks, large shopping developments, very large hotels of 5
or more storeys.

5. The use of heavy wall pipe should also be considered where there is known to be plans for any future
development within the pipeline consultation distance in order to reduce the pipeline proximity
distance and prevent claims for loss of development. Engineering Policy should be consulted for advice
on the significance of the proposed development and the appropriate length of heavy wall pipe that will
be required.
