 Stone Age – Is a term described a period of history when stones where used to make tools for
survival.

 The three period of the Stone age culture (14,000- 2,000 BCE)
1. Paleolithic – the late years of the stone age
2. Mesolithic- middle stone age
3. Neolithic- New stone age

 Most ancients artworks depicts- Religious symbols , Organisms from nature, Activities of everyday
life

Prehistoric Art
 Paleolithic art-is a product of climate change,As the climate get coolder,part of the human instinct
is to look for shelters that will provide them with warmth.

 Neolithic art- has developed especially when life for the early humans has become more stable.
-They learned to cultivate the land and domesticate animals.
-Stonehenge (4000 BCE) a famous architectural structure during Neolithic period.

Egyptian Art
 Fertile Ribbon- starts from the banks of the nile river which flows north to Africa and
ventures into the Mediterranean.
The Three Periods of Egyptian Civilizations

OLD KINGDOM

 During the Old Kingdom it was evident that religion was bound to the afterlife.
 Narmer Palette- one of the cosmetic palettes found in Egypt,used to utilized and applied dark colors
around King Narrmers Eyes. It is one of the artifacts that emphasized the king’s supreme and absolute
authority.
 Pyramids of Giza was constructed – served as tombs since their main purpose was to provide a resting
place for the pharaos. Were constructed using roughly more than two million limestone blocks.
MIDDLE KINGDOM

 One of the key of Middle Kingdom is a shift in the political hierarchy. There is an emergence of powerful
group of landlords that threatened the authority and rule of the pharaoh.
 Portrait sculptures and fresco paintings emerged during this period.

NEW KINGDOM

 The art of the new kingdom had references from both of the preceding kingdoms. During the previous
kingdoms tombs were just used for worshipping the dead but with the new kingdom, they started having
mortuary temples.
 .Mortuary temples- a place served not only a sanctuary of the dead but also a place of worship for the
living.
 One of the greatest discoveries from Egyptian civilization was the tomb of Tutankhamen. He became a
king at the very young age and died at the age of 18. They were astonished to find gold artworks and
that the coffin was made out of solid gold.
