FS 3100 FIELD INSTALLATION PROCEDURE

1.0 PURPOSE

The purpose of this procedure is to outline the process used to install the Model FS 3100 in a customer’s
location and verify that it meets current performance standards.

2.0 SCOPE

This procedure applies to all field service technicians within the field service department.

3.0 RESPONSIBILITY AND AUTHORITY

The Field Service Manager under the authority of the Operations Manager has the ultimate responsibility
and authority to ensure that this procedure is followed.

4.0 PREPARING FOR THE INSTALLATION

Site Preparation

Prior to installation, submit the Site Preparation document to the customer plus methods documentation.
Before arriving on-site, contact the customer to review the documents and ensure that all preparations
have been made including preparation of standards and reagents. If post-digestion methods such as total
nitrogen or total phosphorus or post-distillation methods such as total cyanide and total recoverable
phenolics are to be run, ensure that the customer has digested or distilled standards and samples prior to
your arrival. Finally, for a multi-channel instrument, make sure you and the customer agree on which
methods are to be run together, ensure that their standards are compatible (prepared in the same matrix)
and that the mixed standards will be prepared prior to your arrival.

NOTE: When making tubing connections, trim all tubes to reasonable lengths to ensure neatness
that is compatible with sufficient operational length. Do not leave excessive tubing lengths as it
makes the system look messy and confusing.

Install the platen extenders into each platen with the extender oriented with the slot down and sliding the
narrow end up into the slot provided on each end of the platen.

Attach the pump tubes to the VersaChem and position into the pump platens with the pump tube oriented

Sample Table

Next, click on Sample Table. The file named cl.tbl should display by default. If not, click File | Open
and double-click of cl.tbl. If the file doesn’t exist or won’t open for some reason, create it by clicking
File | New. Fill in the table as below then click File | Save As and enter cl.tbl for the file name.

NOTE: You must ensure that the Name for each calibration standard entered into the Sample
Table in rows 4 through 10 below is exactly the same as that entered into the Calibrants Table
above. An easy way to do this is to Copy the names from the Calibrants Table and Paste them into
the Sample Table. This is done by highlighting all Names in the Calibrants Table and clicking Edit
/ Copy. Next, open the Sample Table, highlight the first name cell into which you want to paste and
click Edit / Paste.

Collect Data

Click on Collect Data and enter “demo” as the User Name and “A00L0P000” as the ID into the dialog
box; e.g, as “A zero zero L zero P zero zero zero”. If the Method or Sample Table is not already open, in
the Run Setup dialog box, select the sample table (cl.tbl) and method (xxxxx.mth) where xxxxx = the
name of the method to be used for this validation and click OK.

WinFLOW will next request a name for the data table which you can enter as any new name. The Data
Collection screen will appear.

Go to the Pumps menu and select the appropriate pump to start. Also ensure that the pump power is
turned on and the roller drum is rotating in the counterclockwise direction.

NOTE: Once all air has cleared through the manifold, you will probably have to alternately
compress and release the flow cell waste line tube to purge air from the optical path.

Initiate baseline collection by clicking the Play button to start displaying

the baseline. The Cycle Start time set in the Timed Events Editor screen will

determine the maximum length of time the system will remain in baseline
collection mode to allow the user to monitor the baseline and verify system
stability before starting the run. The status bar at the screen’s bottom left displays
“Baseline View” during this period.
A real-time signal begins displaying in the Peak Plot window. The Fast Forward, Stop and Zero icons
become active on the Data Collection icon ribbon on the left of the screen. The Peak Results Table,
Calibration Plot and Calibration Results Table windows become active once the run is started.

Obtain percent full-scale and detector gain values for the reference and sample by going to the Window
menu and selecting Serial Communication. This indicates if the lamp is functioning properly.

During the baseline monitoring period the signal produced by the pumping DI water displays and should
meet the criteria in the following table:

If the vertical noise value is excessive, a bubble is probably trapped in the flow cell. If the drift value is
excessive, micro-bubbles are likely accumulating in the flow cell. In either case, alternately compress and
release the elastic portion of the tubing leading from the flow cell outlet to waste until the signal
stabilizes. If the signal does not stabilize, you may have to degas the DI water or add a surfactant to the
DI water as described in the method.

Once the readings are stabilized, switch the color reagent pump line from D.I. water to the color reagent
bottle and pump reagent into the manifold and flow cell until all air has been cleared. Once again, you
may need to alternately compress and release the elastic portion of the flow cell outlet tubing to purge all
air bubbles from the flow cell to achieve a stable baseline.

Place the calibration standards into the standards rack according to the cup numbers as specified in the
Sample Table. The standards positions specified in the Sample Table map to the positions in the first
standards rack layout below if the 3090 Autosampler is configured and the second standards rack layout
below if the 3360 Autosampler is configured.

4.1.26 Click the Fast Forward button to start the analysis.

NOTE: For proper operation, it is critical that the sample completely fills the loop of the injection
valve and that the valve rotate to the Inject position before the trailing air bubble from the sampler
enters the sample loop. The injection valve starts in the Load position with the sample loop placed
in line with the sample stream. Carefully observe aspiration of the first standard to ensure that it
completely fills the loop of the valve before the valve rotates to the Inject position. If the timing is
off, either the times are entered incorrectly in the Timed Events Editor screen, the pump tube being
used is the incorrect inner diameter (color code) or the tubing connecting the sample probe to port
6 of the valve is the wrong length.

Make the necessary corrections until sample has successfully completely filled the loop prior to
injection and the valve has rotated to the Inject position before the trailing air bubble has entered
the sample loop.

The peak shapes for FIA should look similar to this:

The peak shapes for SFA should look similar to this.

Once the calibration standards have been run, you should see a second order curve displayed like the one
below and the calculated correlation coefficient displayed in the Calibration Table should be at least 0.999
and the carryover should be less than 2%.

If the correlation coefficient is <0.999, remake the standards and rerun the calibration.

If the carryover is >2%, check to ensure that the method is set up physically and in software exactly as
directed in the method document, especially the sample loop size for FIA or sample aspiration pump tube
for SFA and the pump tube sizes (color codes) for the carrier and reagent lines and make any corrections.

If the carryover is still >2% micro-bubbles may be getting trapped in the flow cell. Alternately press and
release the elastic tubing of the flow cell waste line until a steady baseline is achieved then rerun the
calibration standards.

If the carryover is still >2%, remake the color reagent then rerun the calibration standards.

Once the system has been qualified as above for single channel operation, if there is a second or third
channel, qualify each one individually by repeating the above procedure for each AU. To do this, you
will attach the sample probe to the second or third valve for FIA or aspiration pump tube for SFA and
transfer the chloride fluidics from the previous AU to the current one under test.

Once each individual AU is qualified, for a two -channel FIA system, connect the valves according to the
following diagram:

NOTE: For proper operation, it is critical that the sample completely fills the loops of BOTH
injection valves and that both valves rotate to the Inject position before the trailing air bubble from
the sampler reaches port 6 of the first injection valve. The injection valve starts in the Load
position with the sample loop placed in line with the sample stream. Carefully observe aspiration of
the first standard to ensure that it completely fills the loop of the valve before the valve rotates to
the Inject position. If the timing is off, either the times are entered incorrectly in the Timed Events
Editor screen, the pump tube being used is the incorrect inner diameter (color code) or the tubing
between the sample probe and port 6 of the first valve is the wrong length.

Make the necessary corrections until sample completely fills the loop prior to injection and the
valve rotates to Inject before the trailing air bubble reaches port 6 of the first valve.
