COVID-19: 3 Lessons for Climate Change

SUMMARIZATION

Since the epidemic of corona virus occurred, the world’s economic and industry has
gone to a standstill. This is due to the government issues of Movement Control Order
(MCO), which restricts the movements. While this happened, there are reports stating that
the surrounding air becomes cleaner and less pollution at most of the country. This causes
the greenhouse gas emissions curve to be flattened. This proves that human is the main
cause for the pollution occurred on earth. In order to avoid the global temperature rise to a
temperature of 1.5 degree Celsius, something has to be done.
PROBLEM STATEMENT

As stated by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, we have only 10 years

left to keep global temperature rise to a maximum of 1.5 degree Celsius or else the risk of
drought, floods, extreme heat and poverty of people will occurred. Even with the pandemic
of COVID-19 occurring now, the emissions are expected to rebound when economic activity
recovers. To avoid the same situations to happen again, a decisive action must be taken
while the world is currently recovering.
DISCUSSIONS

Societies can shift behaviour on many aspects such as working environment and
business necessities. During this time where movement is limited, people have to change
their way of life. Work such as meeting clients, selling shirts or item at the shop needs to be
changed. Procuring daily items or buying food also has to be done in a different way. People
also have to change their mindset as to think their current way of life to be the norm now.
They have to get used to being monitored and controlled as to lead a better way of life in
the future.
Planet’s condition have to stay within limits as to avoid biodiversity loss and
disruption of ecosystems. As the economic and industrial grows, it will left a big impact on
the earth. Most industrial activities will surely releases gas emissions as well as other
chemical substances which will contribute to the greenhouse effect as well as the ozone
depletion which will finally leads to global warming and wildfire. Other than that, there are
also many bad affect which will corrupt the earth.
SOLUTIONS

1. Engineering Solution

By employing the online social instead of direct social, people can completely
avoid physical contact while being able to communicate freely. This can be applied
on many situations; be it working purpose or daily life purpose. If it is to be
compared to direct social, the communication can be done anywhere at anytime
desired. This will also eliminates the needs of transportation.
In order to reduce the effect of economic and industry to the earth, some
activities have to be changed or either be removed completely. For example, the
energy production from fossil fuels have to be reduced and be replaced with
renewable energy method in stages. This applied for both industry purpose and
transportation purpose.

2. Non-engineering Solution

By relying on apps such as Grab for food deliveries or buying the daily
necessities, physical contact can be avoided. This will reduces the likelihood of the
virus to spread while maintaining safety first. This will also open up for new job
opportunities.
By limiting the amount of transportation for each person and family, or
setting limits for gas emission release on each state depending on the size of the
area, the likelihood of the greenhouse effect can be reduced as well as slowing down
the effect of thinning the ozone layers of the earth.
