Gate Ball – Target

Principle of play
With possession (offence) Without possession (conservation)
Place object as close as possible / in the intended target
Prevent opponents’ objects from being nearest to / in target

Aim:
To strike objects to a target, to achieve the highest score, and use decision making skills in
order to select the most appropriate and advantageous shot.

Set up:
A playing course divided into sections, each section has 3 targets, marked by different colour
coated cones and worth different points ie. more complex shot = more points. Course can be
extended and be made larger than the diagram below. Students will play individually through
the course, with an opposing partner taking turns each shot.

Primary Rules:
• Can use any implement to shoot through gates, ie. lawn bowl, soccer ball.
• Once a player shoots object through target they will begin aiming to the next section
of the course from where their object lands. If ball goes through target then player
cannot continue to play in that course section, they must move on
• Achieve as many points as possible in the game
• Players get a maximum of 5 shots per course section, if they do not get a target after
5th shot, they must begin striking to the next section of the course.
• Strike through objects to achieve points
• Must play through each course sequentially
• Can knock opponents’ ball as a shot

Scoring:
Strike through target to receive points
Red: 1 point
Blue: 3 points
Green: 5 points
