Topic: Target practice (shooting) for college-aged beginners

Learning Objectives: SWBAT…

● Name and explain 3 skill cues to shoot a soccer ball
● Demonstrate how to shoot a stationary and moving soccer ball to a target using proper
form (ankle locked, toes down)
● Work independently to practice shooting to targets

Skill Cues for shooting a soccer ball:

1. Step:
a. Step toward the ball with your dominant foot
2. Plant:
a. Step with your nondominant foot and plant it next to the ball pointed to the
target (goal)
3. Kick:
a. With your ankle locked and pointed toes down, kick with the instep of foot and
follow through

Intro:

Did you know that the highest scoring soccer game ever was 149-0? That is a lot of goals
scored in one game. To be able to score this many goals, you have to be good at shooting the
soccer ball. Today we are going to work on target practice which is important so that we can
score goals using accurate and proper shooting form.

There are 3 things we want to remember when shooting a soccer ball and these are:
● STEP
● PLANT
● KICK

*students will demonstrate with the teacher and repeat the cues
Target practice activity 1:

Set up: The cones indicate the distances the student will be shooting the ball from. The distance
progressively increases as shooting success increases. The student will place two colored
sheets of paper on the wall, fence, etc to indicate targets.

● This activity will get us comfortable with making contact with the ball and work on our
shooting form.
● First, we need to recall our cues for proper shooting form (step, plant, kick).
● If you are working individually, you will pick the target you are aiming for before kicking. If
you have someone, let them tell you which one to aim for.
● Keep a mental note of your successes.
● Which color target are you hitting most successfully to? Why? Is your non-dominant foot
planted to the target you are kicking to?
● Once you have five makes to each target, increase your distance by moving back to the
next cone. Continue doing this until you have reached the last cone.
Target practice activity 2: also includes review of dribbling and passing

Set up: Students will place a cone or object straight in line with the goal (or whatever students
are using as their target). This is where they will begin with the ball. They will place two cones
(or other object) on the left and right side about 15 feet from the starting cone.

● Students will begin with their soccer ball at the center cone furthest from the goal.
● They pick either the left or the right cone and will dribble down to it.
● Upon reaching it, they will kick the ball out and then shoot
● If students are able to have a partner: after dribbling to the cone, pass the ball to your
helper and have them pass it back to you and shoot upon receiving
● Students will be sure to shoot from each cone 5 times
● Students may adjust the distance they are kicking from depending on success rates
● For those who need a challenge, work your way back and increase the distance
Target practice activity 3:

Set up: There will be a cone placed away from the goal in the center. This is where the student
will begin with the ball. They will begin with their back facing the goal.

● Students will begin at the cone with their backs facing the goal.
● If the student has a partner, the ball will begin at the cone directly in front. The partner
will pass the ball to the student in which the student must quickly turn their direction and
shoot the ball.
● If there is no partner, the student will place the ball in front of them with their back facing
the goal and change direction followed by shooting the ball.
● Students should aim to make quick turns with the ball to practice changing direction with
the ball.
● Students will do this 5-10 times.
● Be sure to change the direction in which you are turning and moving with the ball.
