Team Offense and Team Defense Lesson Plan

- We will first go over Team Offense
- There are a multitude of different formations and plays you can choose from to run
your offense, but to make it easy for everyone I selected two formations that you can
play out of and also three plays that can be run in the halfcourt offense.
The three plays that we will incorporate into our offense will be ISO, Runner, and Two
High
- ISO- in this play the point guard will call 1 preceded by the player’s number. That player
will then come get the ball from the point guard and go to their desired wing spot which
can either be the right or left side. If the player chooses the right side, then no other
player should be on the right side of the court. One player, preferably the point guard,
will be at the top of the court, another at the opposite wing, one in the opposite corner,
and the center on the block opposite of the isolation player. The only player that is
allowed to go near the isolation player is the big man where they will help with a screen
and then roll to the basket or pop out for a shot. If nothing develops the point guard will
come get the ball and reset the play or call another play.
- Runner (direction) - in this formation there will be 3 out and 2 in. The point guard will
bring the ball up the court in the lane directed of the play, which can be either left or right
but must be stated when calling the play. The pg will stop at the top of the court and the
sg will be to the opposite wing of the play. The “runner” will start on the same side as the
pg in the corner. The two big men will occupy both blocks. Once the point guard reaches
the wing on the play direction, they will signal to the team to initiate the play. This can be
a simple “go” or “now”. Once the pg says this the point guard will quickly dribble to the
top of the key and pass to the player on the opposite wing. The “runner” will run to the
opposite corner and look for the ball from the wing player. The two big men will come
together at the block on the side that the “runner” started on and perform a double screen
which is when two players stand shoulder to shoulder and screen the defender at the same
time. This will free up the runner in the hopes of an open corner shot. If the shot is not
there then the runner will pass it out back to the wing player and back to the point guard
to reset the play. The two big men can stay to try and collect and offensive rebound or
they can pop out to the perimeter to create space for a potential drive from the runner.
- In this formation the pg will be at the top and two players will occupy both wings. The
two big men will occupy both elbows. The goal of this is to get it to our big men in the
middle. If the ball rotates to a wing then one big man goes down to the same side block
and posts up while the other big man replaces his position on the elbow. The big man at
the elbow can receive the ball also to make and easier pass to the player at the block. If
the ball is rotated back up top then both big men will go back to the elbows and reset. Big
men are allowed to set screens for the perimeter players and replace their positions if
needed.
The two formations that I chose that we are going to run are a 4 Out 1 in formation and a 5
out
- 4 Out. As the name suggests, this offense consists of 4 players spaced out behind the
three-point line and 1 post player inside. There are several ways to go about this play but
the main thing that is associated with it is passing and cutting. Once a player passes they
ball to a teammate they must cut through the lane to the basket, while still having hands
ready for a potential pass to the basket. The other two teammates on the perimeter who
didn’t get the ball will rotate to replace the gap that was left by the cutting player. The
gap that is created near the corner by the rotation is to be filled by the cutting player. This
passing and cutting needs to take place a few times before any attempt is made to create a
shot. The purpose is to get the defense out of position so when a player decides to create
a shot it will be a lot easier than just having it one on one. The big man is allowed to set
screens and utilize the pick and roll in this set. The center can also bounce from elbow to
block around the paint in the attempt to seal off the defender and get the ball. Even if you
pass it to the defender you should still cut because it can create openings for yourself and
others.
- 5 out. 5 out follows the same principles as 4 out except there isn’t a person in the paint.
The goal is to pass and cut until openings happen and the defense gets out of position.
You can set screens for each other in the attempt to free up your teammates. This
formation can easily transfer to a 4 out by having the big man just move into the lane
using a pick and roll. If the pick and roll isn’t there then the big man will just stay in the
paint and the offense is now a 4 out. Safety valves are also important in this. If a player
decides to drive to the basket then the rotation can happen then too instead of just a pass.
The reason is to have a safety net for the player that is driving in case they get cut off or
nothing develops. This is also a great way to get an open shot because defenses usually
crash down when a player drives and the perimeter is usually left open.
To practice each of these we will have everyone back on the opposite end where I will shoot
a free throw. They will then rebound the free throw and give the ball to the point guard
who will look for the call from the coach on the side. The point guard should call out the
play a little before they are crossing the half court line. Once everyone is set they can run
the play.

Defense

There are two types of defenses in basketball. One is called Man defense and the other is Zone
defense.

Man-to-man defense pairs every defensive player with an offensive counterpart to guard. Usually,
players will mark their equal on the court, but basketball coaches sometimes shake things up depending
on who they’re up against. Man-to-man defense is super reliable because teams get consistent cover on
the opposition, so it’s easy to set up traps, force turnovers, and box out key players.

The three parts of Man to Man defense are On-ball Defense, Off-ball Defense, and Help defense.

On-ball defense as the name suggests is defense on the person with the ball.
- We will work this by having a offensive player with a ball start at the corner of the basketball
court with a defender on them. The offensive player will dribble to the elbow then to the corner
of half court then to the elbow down the court and then finish at the corner of the court. The
defender will stand with an athletic position with arms out guarding the defender. The defender
should slide their feet in the direction that the offensive player is going and should remain in
close proximity to them. The defender chest should be inches away from the offensive players
shoulder.

Off-ball defense, again as the name suggests, is defense off the ball

- We will this by having one offensive player at the top of the key and another at one wing. There
will be one defender and they will guard the wing player. The scenario we are working is that
the offensive player at the top of the key as picked up their dribble and the defender must deny
the pass to the wing player. This is also called a face guard. The defender should stand in
between the passer and the person they are guarding to make the passing lane nonexistent.

The last type of defense is Help Defense. Help defense is all about positioning and helping out your
teammates when a offensive player gets by them.

- In this drill we will have 3 offensive players and 3 defensive players. One offensive player will be
on the left wing one will be on the opposite side block and other at the opposite wing. There will
be defenders on all three offensive players. The ball will start at one of the wings and that player
will drive towards the basket. The defender on that person should let them go by for the sake of
showing the purpose of help defense. The defender who is guarding the player on the block will
have to help out the defender who just lost control of his man. The defender down low will step
over and try and get in front of the driving offensive player to prevent an easy shot. The
defender guarding the player on opposite wing will in turn have to help out the low post
defender and step in front of the low post offensive player to prevent an easy passing lane. The
defender who got beat initially by the driving offensive player will stay over the top of that
player in an attempt to double team them. If successful there will be a pick up of a dribble or the
player will dribble back out to the perimeter where the initial defender can regain control of the
player and the players who helped can return to their initial offensive matchups.

There are multiple zone defenses but we will only focus on the 2-3 and 3-2 zone defense.

- In the 2-3 zone there is two players at each elbow at the top, one player in the paint just in front
of the basket and one player on either side of them.
- A 3-2 zone will have one player at the top of the key, two players guarding the wings, and two
players guarding the blocks.
- The concept is that if there is someone in your zone you pick them up regardless of the offensive
player position.
- This makes it easier than running around following a man
