PRACTICE PLAN TEMPLATE

Practice Plan
Problem(s) encountered during previous practice/games: not very many if any problems occurred. I think
maybe if there was it was that we as learners hit a point where we got distracted and wanted to play a game
so making sure we put some games in there for us so we can put what we’re learning into mock gameplay.

Today’s Practice focus: Rebounding (both foul shots and gameplay) – defensively and offensively.

Skill Activities:
First, we’re going to work on rebounding to ourselves. To do this, you are going to throw the ball up in the
air from an athletic stance. You are then going to jump up and meet the ball at your highest point with your
hands. Once secured you want to bring the ball down to your chest and back in your athletic stance. If the
ball travels, you must track it with your eyes and go get it.
Next, we’re going to run a drill called “Bull in the Ring”. This is to work on proper stance in how bow out our
opponent. For this drill we’re going to be partnered up with a ball between the defensive side and the
offensive. As leader of this drill, I will call out “shot” and begin counting 4 seconds. After “shot” is called
that is when the offense starts trying to go towards the ball. Defense side should have arms out and legs
bent in their athletic stance working to prevent the offense from getting past. If defense holds off offense
for the 4 seconds, then they successfully got the rebound, however, if offense gets past in the 4 seconds,
then offense has recovered the ball.
Finally, we’re going to work on getting a rebound from a foul shot. For this, students will stand along the
paint in offensive and defensive positioning. Students will rotate between offensive, defensive, and taking
the shot to work on all aspects of the skills expected from this aspect. The goal is for the offensive to get the
ball and try to get a shot off if they successfully recover the ball. Defensive goal is to prevent the offense
from getting the ball and gaining control of ball. Shooter goal is to make the shot for extra points.

Organization:
Skill cues: ABC (athletic stance, box out, and catch)
Check for why we rebound in a game. (rebounds are a way for change of possession to occur without a point
being scored, however, sometimes the team that took the shot gets the ball back and can try again for a
shot).
• Rebounding to self
• Rebounding drill (Bull in the Ring)
• Foul shot rebounds
• Rebounds in game play

Cool-down:
Game play (4v4) with trying to catch a rebound off a shot when missed. If fouls occur, (students should be
honest about fouls) then a foul shot will be called and taken. Students will decide to know where they
should be and be ready to try and catch the rebound if shot is missed.
