Trooping
the Colour
Do you want to see a unique
event? Don’t miss Trooping the
Colour in London! Let’s find out
about this British celebration.

What is it?
Trooping the Colour is a celebration that marks
the birthday of the British king or queen. This
tradition started over 260 years ago!
Today, over 1400 parading soldiers, 200 horses and
400 musicians come together each June in a great
display of military precision, horsemanship and
fanfare, to mark the Queen’s official birthday. In
fact, in the UK, Trooping the Colour is also known
as ‘The Queen’s Birthday parade’.

Every year, on a Saturday between
11-17 June, people gather in the
centre of London to celebrate.
The streets are lined with crowds
waving flags as the parade moves
from Buckingham Palace and
down The Mall to Horse Guard’s

Royal Family on horseback and in
carriages.
The display closes with a Royal
Airforce display, watched by
Members of the Royal Family from
Buckingham Palace balcony.

What’s the meaning behind Trooping the Colour?

Traditionally on battlefields colours were used as gathering points for soldiers. Men would

slowly march with the colours and flags to make sure that every soldier could recognise
others of his own regiment. So while today the ceremony is one of the most spectacular of
London’s annual traditions, it began just as a way to help soldiers find their regiments.
