Slope of the line

𝑦2 − 𝑦1
𝑚=
𝑥2 − 𝑥1
Example
If we have the pair of points
A(1,2) and B(3,4) find the slope and the equation for
this line
Solution
The point A will be the pair (𝑥1 , 𝑦1 ) whereas the point
B will be the pair (𝑥2 , 𝑦2 ), but in this sort of problems
the order is not important, we could chose like the
pair (𝑥1 , 𝑦1 ) the point B, however, that will not
change the result.
Using the formula to find the slope we will obtain
4−2 2
𝑚= = =1
3−1 2
Therefore the slope obtainted is 𝑚 = 1
So now to compute the equation of the line we will
use the point slope model which it says that
𝑦 − 𝑦1 = 𝑚(𝑥 − 𝑥1 )
To solve this equation it is necessary to know the
slope m and just one of the point that they were
given, it can be as the point 𝐴 or the point 𝐵, it does
not matter which point is decided to use, that will not
change the equation form. In this case we will use the
point 𝐴, thus The equation for this line will be
𝑦 − 2 = 1(𝑥 − 1)
Simplifying the expression
𝑦−2=𝑥−1
Rewriting this expresión with all the terms written in
the left side it is gotten
−𝑥 + 𝑦 − 1 = 0

General form
𝐴𝑥 + 𝐵𝑦 + 𝐶 = 0
Solving for the variable “y”
𝐴 𝐶
𝑦 = −( )𝑥 − ( )
𝐵 𝐵
𝐴
Where 𝑚 = −
𝐵
Point-slope model
𝑦 − 𝑦1 = 𝑚(𝑥 − 𝑥1 )
