Science topic. Robotics

One of the subjects we teach at the school is robotis. Robotics is one of the subjects we teach at
the school. It allows our students to develop very useful skills such as:

● Creative potential
● Critical sense
● Empowerment
● Organization of the work
● …

This subject also allows us to teach our students in a different way, based on manipulation,
experimentation, research of information and collaborative work.

These are the reasons why we thought it would be interesting to share these activities with
students from other countries.

Transversal topic. Women in science and tech.

Nowadays one of the main concerns not only for teachers but also for society is how the scientific
vocations have decreased among young girls. One the other hand, most of the science teachers. Here in
our school, there are women. Both tied together made us choose this as a transversal topic. We think it
is important for both, male and female students to see that women are members of science a long time
ago and, even if they have not been as recognized as some men, they have contributed to very
important discoveries.
Schedule
We set aside 30 minutes every morning for the students to join their teacher and talk about the
day before and detect any problem as fast as possible. Luckily it was not the case.

We separate the 48 students in two groups for the main activities, 12 Spanish students in each
one and the host student always with his hosted one. The first group stayed at school doing activities 3
and 4 on Tuesday and went to University on Wednesday and the other inside out.

Methodology
Act.1. Ice breaking games
Given that there were different students from different countries we thought it was a nice idea
to set up some ice breaking games for giving them the opportunity to get to know each other much
better. We programmed them for the first day and the results were absolutely amazing in terms of
socialization.
Act.2. Women in science and tech
Margarita Salas, Elena García Armada, Sara Gomez Martín, Elena Asins and María del Carmen Martínez
Sancho were the five women we chose for this activity. The idea was to let our students see how these
ladies were important for society at the time with their professional career.

Students were divided in groups and they were awarded one of the women mentioned before, and
required to search certain information about here.

After that, they made a photocall, metal sheets and recorded a video. They were also given some
credential cards.
Act.3. Robotics workshop for beginners
We divided the 24 students in 4 groups composed of 3 Spanish students with their hosted
student in each one. The idea of this activity was to search basic information on the internet and
complete a report in order to acquire basic notions about the main robotic terms and concepts (sensor,
actuator, analog, digital, motherboard...), and also about a block programming program (bitblock or
Mblock).
Act.4. Working in groups at school
After Activity 3 they acquired enough knowledge to face a challenge. We propose 4 challenges,
one for each group to solve by programming some components we provided them in small kits: light
sensors, buttons, LEDS, motors… We gave an exercise script to each group.

The 4 challenges were:

● Self-watering flowerpot

● Intelligent lighter. Automatic rolling shooter

● Noise pollution indicator

● Electric Car

These are 4 of the stands the students organized in the Science Fair.
Act.5. Public University of Navarra visit
Students went to the Public University of Navarre. First of all they made a guided visit to some of
the main places as the library, and some technical ones as the “non echo room” where the engineers
develop and test the antennas they design.

After that they were assigned to 4 different arduino projects and explained how they worked. Those
were the other 4 stands in the science fair.

Conclusión
From our point of view It was a very interesting experience not only for students but also for teachers.

Once we finished our week as host school, we met our students and they were very happy.

The main thing they highlighted was the personal experience. Before the arrival of the hosted students
they were very nervous but all of them would have repeated the experience after they left. They agreed
it's very rewarding to live together with a boy or girl of their ages from another country. They also
emphasized how different ways of working they have in the different countries and how the mix of all
add making a more completed result.

Teacher, we also realized how our students felt responsible for the wellworking of the activities because
they had also notions about robotics, and how hosted students showed interest about this topic, learnt
very fast through experimentation and finally obtained really good results.

The last group we talked to was the primary teacher. They congratulated us, The Eramus group, for how
all the students worked together, made different activities for the children to pay attention, and
explained such complicated concepts and terms to the small children. Their students enjoyed the
experience a lot, learned some new concepts and were very excited not just about robotics and what
they could do with it, but also with the idea of being able to participate in an international project as
Erasmus+ in the future.
