Overview

Learning outcomes

Operate autonomously in complex, unpredictable and/or specialised contexts that require

the selection and application of a wide range of advanced techniques

In order to achieve this outcome will have to research different soul song an analise what
are the stylistic of the genre.

 How the medley is written

 Chord progressions
 Guitar tone
 Voice tone

1. Demonstrate the acquisition of a deep and systematic understanding of the

pertinent theoretical, technical and conceptual issues that relate to their chosen
instrumental discipline

Thinking skills

3. Design and undertake substantial investigations that address the pertinent

theoretical, technical and conceptual issues relating to their chosen instrumental
discipline

So I will have to

4. Demonstrate the ability to synthesise information and ideas in innovative ways in

order to produce transformative solutions

Subject-based practical skills

5. Autonomously implement and evaluate improvements to their own performance,

drawing on current innovative practices within their chosen instrumental discipline in
multiple contexts.

Skills for life and work (general skills)

course of action will be to research into what tracks have

Overview
For this module I have decided to investigate and perform well known hip hop and dance
tracks into a striped back, Soul/RnB genre. The reason why I have decided to do this is
because I feel that most people now are more interested in beats more than lyrics. I also
think the guitar can have more of an impacted on the song itself. For example, songs like
Tracy chapman’s “fast cars” made come back into the charts as a remix by Jonas Blue. So I
want to do the opposite. By doing this I will improve my arrangement skills for guitar and
voice. I want to see if the audience would still be able to recognise and enjoy the song
without electric beats. I want to make the guitar a big part of the arrangement by using
different effects and a loop pedal BECAUSE I feel like it will add to the atmosphere of a laid
back feel. but also being able to use the stylistic techniques of soul and Rnb, for example
voice leading chord progressions.

In order for this to work, I will need to strip back the tempo and change the tune of the song
to something more mellow. I need to make sure that the songs lyrics have a story to it that I
can work with and make it something that sounds like its never been heard of before. More
dance tracks now a days have an aggressive beat and no real story behind it. Most of the
choruses in dance songs are mostly repeated words and often made to sound catchy so they
are remembered and not forgotten. Whereas, I want to bring back new types of emotion
and feel into a dance song that is not necessary designed for.

When recreating the music for the guitar, I will need to make sure it is fun and uplifting for
people to listen too. I will need to use more effects and techniques to ensure that the beat is
still there. I feel using the electric guitar will be the best way to show off the song itself as it
has more depth in the sound. For the 45-minute recital I’m going to only use guitar and
voice but maybe use a loop pedal during the solos. I thinking of comparing the two genres
to see which people prefer.

Tutor

The tutor I wish to have is chris Newland, I feel like he was played with similar artist that will
relate to my project.

Things I need to though with him:

 More interesting arrangements

 Chord voicings
 Improvisation

I think one lesson very two weeks will be enough to reach my goals.
