Past Tenses
As a warm up activity, you are going to check the next video and then discuss in class.

The video is about what?

Plot: The story is about a man who saw a monster coming out of the water and
someone saved him and warned him of not falling asleep near the river when there is a
full moon. 

Characters: a green monster (a moon gobbling) , a man and a doctor. 

location: near the water, he was walking, near the river Thames ( England -  London) 
Time: in the middle of the  night and with a full moon in the sky.

Past tenses that are the ones we use to narrate. 

Past progressive
Last night, I was walking home next to the river Thames, 

when (connect  the two sentences: conditional connector)

simple past
 something strange happened to me (subject-object).

In order to study past tenses you are going to write a very simple story with a
beginning a middle and a closure, may be a mysterious anecdote. 

you read the story in class and we explain the tenses you used. 

Structure of the present simple:

Subject a verb (action) complement

Simple Past: we indicate that the action took place only once in the past. 
Past: Last night, I drank too much wine. (anoche, yo tomé mucho vino)

Yo estudiaba inglés el año pasado.. 

I used to study Ingles last year.  SIMPLE PAST:  I studied English last year. 

I used to sing the school chorus when I was 14 years old.  ( Yo solia cantar… )

Cuando yo tenia 12 años yo bebía mucha leche. 

When I was 12 I used to drink too much milk.

Past: Last night, I drank too much wine. (anoche, yo tomé mucho vino)

Beber: to drink
Present: Drink: (I, You, We, they) 
Drinks ( He, She, It).

Past: Drank (I, You, We, they, He, She, it)

Beber: Yo bebí Tu bebiste El/ella/ bebió Nostros bebimos Ellos/as:
bebieron

I/you/we/they/he/she/it: drank.

In English for you to recognize the past form in simple past, yo have to divide the verbs
in two big groups: (affirmation)

Regular verbs: 
 to form the past form of this group it is only necessary to add: -ed ending. 
e.g
To live: regular
Present: I live in Maracaibo Neighborhood.

Past: Last year, I lived in Comfandi neighborhood. 

Irregular verbs:
to form the past form of this group you have to use a completely new form: 

To eat: Irregular

Present: I always eat crackers for my breakfast. 

past:   Last morning, I ate crackers for my breakfast.

You have to differentiate between regular and irregular verbs. in order to build an
affirmation in simple past.

In simple past we talk about one action that took place only once in the past.

Past progressive: the action takes place in the past it develops in the past until
another action interrupts.

Last night I was studying English when there was a blackout.

El año pasado estuve viajando…… (a donde? por que?)

Last year, I was travelling around Europe, when I found the love of my life.
