The world of art has great works that are considered excellent for the public, but at the

same time they are dismissed for the intelligentsia who try to influence over the audience. The

Lord of the Rings, an epic high fantasy novel written by English author and scholar J. R. R.

Tolkien, and brought to the big screen as a trilogy does not escape for these positive and negative

points of view, despite its great successful.

The article titled The Book of the Century and the video about the plot and story of The

Lord of the Rings mention the popularity of this epic story. The movie won 11 categories of

Academic Award, becoming in one of the most award-winning movies. On her behalf, the book

was voted the greatest book of the 20th century.

In spite of this high acceptance, The Lord of the Rings in both formats, book and movie,

has some negative critics which are clearly expressed by the article and video. The article

mentions that many intellectuals ask why this book is considered as great if it is boyish fantasy,

boring and absurd. And the video says that some people considered the end so long. Although

this negative opinions, the positive points win the public at large who ignored the critic’s views.

Many people ask what is the reason for the successful of The Lord of the Rings, why

millions of “readers happily devour a work as complicated as this”. Then, it is necessary to

observe meaningful aspects that form the story. The article The Book of the Century speaks

about the abilities of Tolkien to create the story. In that text is said that this author “saw his

realm of Middle earth not as a fiction or invention, but as the recovery of something genuine that

had become buried beneath fragments of fairy tale”. So, it is clear that Tolkien contributed to

improve the literature in his own way. Tolkien evidences a great creativity in the writing of The

Lord of the Rings. He was able to create an imaginative world that keeps alive in the collective

imagination. At the same time, he shows his linguistic expertise creating a language for the

characters. All aspects evidence that this author possessed an immense intellect and erudition.

For its part, the video about the plot and story of The Lord of the Rings shows

fundamental aspects that strengthen the positive opinions about this story. It mentions the

difference between the story and the plot, arguing the story is more important, and it is defined

by the themes. In the movie, some of them are told such as “resisting temptation of power and

the unbreakable bond of friendship”. On the other hand, the climax of the plot it is when the ring

is destroyed. In this sense, the readers could think the end of the story is near, but they do not

expect that the climax of the story does not arrive with the destruction of the ring. Another

important point appears influencing the story is when characters make decisions that change

what they are. Frodo does not show happiness until the climax of the story when he can defeat

the influence of the ring in his life.

In conclusion, the Lord of the Rings is a great work of literature, brought to the big screen

which has achieved great successful, evidenced in all award that it has won. As all work of art, it

has a large popularity, but there are some people show negative points of view about it.

However, the positive aspects are reafirmed for the creativity of the author creating the world

Middle earth and the languages of characters, just as the connection of the story, the climax of it.
