PROPOSED INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES FOR AUTISTIC PUPILS

This module has introduced me to the term autism. I now realize that learners can have different
biological differences some of which can affect their learning and future if not taken care of. As
a professional teacher, I would suggest the following strategies in the context of my classroom.

Designing and planning more learner involving lessons. Unlike sticking to books and black or
white boards as the main instruments of my instruction, I would incorporate activities that are
related to my lesson topics. This is because such activities would keep my learners engaged for
the most time of the lesson. It should be noted that autism affects the concentration of learners
and sticking to traditional lesson plans of reading, writing and explanation would only leave
autistic learners out. I would therefore use techniques such as role-play, dramatization and
problem solving tasks among other techniques that would engage my learners more.

Use of visual references based on autistic-learner specific needs. Whereas explanation plays a
great role in lesson development and success, pictures besides other visual aids would aid autistic
learners greatly. Such learners would perhaps focus and contrate further if treated to visual
references. Well-designed PowerPoint presentations in combination with short well-thought and
selected videos  in my opinion would aid autistic learners.

Giving learners simple and precise instruction. By keeping my instruction very clear and
summarized, would reduce confusion and help autistic learners do assignment and socially
involve with their counterparts in my classroom.  A case in point is using directions to show
learners the sequence of whatever task I expect them to execute would be easier for autistic
learners that simply demanding a final outcome from them.

Utilizing various reward patterns. Given the fact that autistic learners may lack concentration and
attention. Wherever a child does what is expected of them, I would choose a way of rewarding
them in order to motivate them towards relating whatever they have done that invokes reward.
Such systemic motivation would in my opinion go a long way in encouraging engaging with
others and finishing the tasks I give them. Terms such as " Excellent, very good, keep it up" and
a handclap from other classmates would greatly help such learners.

Engaging autistic learners in deciding best teaching and learning practices. Depending on the age
of learners, I would engage my learners and find out their most preferred teaching styles, time
and materials. Making my learners, part of the learning plan would encourage them to stay
committed to strategies whose endorsement they have been part of. 

In a nut shell, depending on the degree of autism identified in my learners, I would take the
strategies above and other better strategies in working towards ensuring and inclusive learning
environment in my classroom.
