INTRODUCTION-

Avis is an American car rental company headquartered in Parsippany, New Jersey, United States.

[1]
Avis, Budget Rent a Car, Budget Truck Rental and Zipcar are all units of Avis Budget Group.[2]
Avis Budget Group operates the Avis brand in North America, South America, India, Australia, and
New Zealand. In 2011, Avis announced it was acquiring Avis Europe plc,[3] which had been a
separate corporation licensing the Avis brand.
Since the late 1970s, Avis has featured mainly General Motors (GM) vehicles such
as Chevrolet and Cadillac, but today also rents popular non-GM brands including Ford and Toyota.
Avis is a leading rental car provider to the commercial segment serving business travelers at major
airports around the world, and to leisure travellers at off-airport locations. Many of the off-airport
locations are franchisedoperations rather than company-owned and -operated, as is the case with
most airport locations. Avis was the first car rental business to be located at an airport.[4]
In January 2013, the company agreed to acquire Zipcar for $491 million.

HISTORY-
The company was founded in 1946 with three cars at Willow Run Airport, Ypsilanti, Michigan,
by Warren Avis (August 4, 1915 – April 24, 2007).[4] It established branch operations across the
United States over the next few years, becoming the second largest car rental company in the
country by 1953. By its tenth anniversary in 1956 it had opened its first international offices
in Europe, Canada and Mexico.
The Avis corporate motto of "We Try Harder" was adopted in 1962, during CEO Robert Townsend's
tenure. The company aimed to put a positive spin on Avis' status as the second largest car rental
company in the United States while also taking a shot at larger competitor The Hertz Corporation.
The slogan was used for 50 years before a re-branding in 2012, when Avis unveiled a new slogan
—"It's Your Space.
In 1972, Avis introduced Wizard, the first computer-based information and reservations system to be
used in the United States car rental business; to this day, almost all frequent Avis customers are
identified by their unique "Wizard number". In 1981, the company instituted its system of vehicle
tracking, that was not coincidentally named Advanced Vehicle Identification System (AVIS).
Avis has been owned by a number of other companies over the years, along with several periods of
being a public company. These include:
 1956 - The Amoskeag Company
 1962 - Investment group Lazard Freres
 1965 - ITT Corporation
 1977 - Norton Simon
 1983 - Esmark
 1984 - Beatrice Foods
 1986 - Investment firm Wesray Capital Corporation[10]
 1987 - Majority ownership under an Employee Share Ownership Plan
 1989 - General Motors (acquires 29% stake)
 1996 - HFS Corporation
 2001 - Cendant
 2006 - Avis Budget Group

Energy Efficient and Eco Driving

Tips
You can Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions
You don’t need a fuel-efficient car to reduce fuel consumption – how you drive
can help you get the best out of your existing car. This is a popular concept
known as hypermiling. These simple hypermiling tips from carbonfund.org will
help you get the most miles for your money, saving on fuel and reducing your
overall environmental impact.
1. Avoid quick acceleration and aggressive driving:
When you floor the gas pedal your car is expending energy as heat and noise.
It produces high pollution rates and wastes gas. According to the American
Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy, one second of high-powered driving
can produce nearly the same volume of carbon monoxide emissions as a half
hour of normal driving.
2. Stick to the speed limit:
Drive within the speed limit. Higher speed means more energy spent on
overcoming friction and maintaining the momentum. Instead of driving at 75
mph, if you drive at 65 mph, your fuel economy will improve by about 10% and
tailpipe pollution will decrease. A leading consumer magazine found:
 Slowing down from 75 mph to 65 mph resulted in a five-mile-per-gallon
performance increase
 And slowing down from 75 mph to 55 mph saved 10 miles per gallon
 According to Edmunds.com, reduced fuel consumption by 7%. Cruise
control will help you maintain a steady, constant speed, which will
reduce the need for acceleration and braking
3. Avoid rush hour:
The stop-and-go driving of rush hour burns gas and increases emissions of
smog-forming pollutants – not to mention the effects of road rage on your
health. Can you plan your schedule to avoid driving during peak traffic times?
Or maybe use a GPS to find a less busy route?
4. Avoid hard breaking:
Anticipate rather than breaking hard! This will prevent increased pollution,
wasted gas and wear on your breaks. This is especially true for congested,
high traffic areas.
5. Don’t idle for more than a minute:
The philosophy of managing your engine extends to idle time too. An idle but
turned on engine generates more pollution than driving, and it wastes fuel.
6. Use an electronic toll collection system:
Avis e-TollTM avoids cash payment lines at toll booths. Studies have found that
paying tolls electronically reduces hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide
emissions by 40-63% and reduces emissions by 16%.
7. Benefit from a GPS navigation system:
The GPS navigation from Avis, provides real-time traffic alerts to help you
avoid traffic jams and road construction. It also guides you to your destination
without getting you lost, eliminating the extra driving that could result when
you become lost. You save on gas, money and driving time while reducing
anxiety and stress.

Avis Car Rental Services

Car Seat Rental, Child Safety and

Protection
Safety is our number-one priority at Avis. We want the right restraint and child
seat for your child. We recommend the following guidelines when selecting
infant and child seats for rental:
 Up to 1 year old (and up to 20-22 pounds)
Rear-facing Infant-only car seat, Convertible or 3-in-1 seat
 Ages 1-3 (and 20 to 40 pounds)
Rear-facing car seat until the top height and weight limit allowed by the
manufacturer is exceeded.
 Ages 4-7 (or until 4'9" tall)
Forward-facing car seat until the top height and weight limit allowed by
the manufacturer is exceeded.
 Age 8-12 (or at least over 4'9")
Booster Seat with lap and shoulder belts until the top height and weight
limit allowed by the manufacturer is exceeded
 Big Kids Need Boosters
The U.S. Government recommends that from 40 to about 80 pounds
and about 4'9" tall, children should always be seated in a belt-
positioning booster. A booster seat lifts children so adult lap/shoulder
seat belts are "positioned" correctly and safely. Plus, booster seats offer
children better visibility and comfort.
