Elison words:
Elision is the omission of one or more sounds, such as syllables or words in speech. This is done to make
the language easier to say, and faster.
It is very common when we use object pronounsand possessive adjectives and using modals. But also,
we have other common words:

Flap T:
Are you aware of the different sound of /t/

● Read situations when flap T is pronounced:

● flap T is between two vowels,
● flap T is with an ɚ sound either before it, after it or before and after it,
● flap T is spelled with double T,
● flap T is before an unstressed L sound
● it’s between two sounds

We’re invited to a party on Saturday.
You’ll find some butter and lettuce in the refrigerator.

But be careful in “true T” as in talk, to, terrible, talk, true, stop, return.
This occurs at the beginning of the words (alone or with other consonants – st, tr, str) or in the middle of
the words at the beginning of a stressed syllable. She shows how the "true” T must be pronounced,
including main characteristics of the "true” T sound.

Syllabic sound:
T = Silence When after N When T comes after N, the T sound is dropped in many words.

It is mostly used when people speak quickly, but it's good to be able to listen for this change.
It is also good to remember not to pronounce a strong T at the middle or end of a word.
When not at the beginning or stressed, a T should be fast and soft or barely heard at all.

Linking:

When two vowel sounds meet, we tend to insert an extra sound which resembles either ​a / j /, / w / or
/ r / ​, to mark the transition sound between the two vowels, a device referred to as intrusion. For example:

● Intruding / j /
I / j / agree.
They / j /are here!

● Intruding / w/
I want to/ ​w​/eat.
Please do/ ​w​/it.

Assimilation:
The word assimilation means to join, and become part of, a different large group.
When certain sounds are followed by the word “you”, ​linking​ and ​reduction​ occurs together, and a
completely different sound is produced. This is called ​assimilation​.

Intonation patterns:
When we make questions, we use two different intonations:

Rising intonation (Yes/No questions)

Falling intonation (Information questions)

▪ Boggs​: Miss Everdeen​, Colonel​ Boggs, District 13’s head of security. I know you have been 
discharged, but President Coin’s requested to meet with you first. 
▪ Katniss Everdeen​: Is there any news? 
▪ Boggs​: I am​ just here to escort you. 
▪ Katniss Everdeen​: We were always told there was nothing left of 13. 
▪ Boggs​: ​Capito​l bombed the surface to ​rubble​. But we are military, so we learned to survive 
down here​. Preparing and training. The war never stopped for us. 
▪ Plutarch Heavensbee​: There she is, our Girl on Fire. Madam President, may I present you 
with The Mockingjay.

▪ Plutarch Heavensbee​: I don’t know​. And I wish that I did. But there is no way for me to 
contact my operatives inside the Capitol. 
▪ Beetee​: The Capitol has always suppressed communication between the districts. But I 
know their system very well. I managed to break through. All we need now is the perfect 
message. 
▪ Plutarch Heavensbee​: Katniss, here’s what we need to do. We need to ​show them​ that The 
Mockingjay’s alive and well and willing to stand up and join this fight.​ Because​ we need every 
district to stand up to this Capitol. The way you did. So, ​we are​ ​going to​ shoot a series of 
propaganda clips, propos, I like to ​call them​, on The Mockingjay. Spreads the word that ​we 
are going to​ stoke the fire of this rebellion. The fire that The Mockingjay started.
