Description:
Hovacal is a portable calibration gas generator for accurate gas- vapor mixtures with selectable humidity and temperatures
up to 200 °C.
HOVACAL is based on the principle of dynamic evaporation of liquids and mixture with carrier gas. The calibration gas
generator consists of a supply unit and an evaporator. The supply unit containing the pump for liquid, flow controller for
carrier gas and temperature controller for the evaporator. The evaporator is installed separately from the supply unit. Both are
connected via a link for carrier gas, liquid and power supply. The gas output of the evaporator can be fed in a heated line or
directly in the gas analyzer. Accuracy, reproducibility and stability of the calibration gas mixture are achieved with a precision
mass flow controller for carrier gas and a peristaltic pump for liquid. The liquid flow can be verified with help of a balance,
the carrier gas flow with a gas meter. This guarantees the verification with primary standards at any time.
The complete calibration gas generator is mounted in a portable case. The calibration of emission monitoring systems needs
span gas with hydrogen chloride, ammonia, hydrogen fluoride and mercury chloride. Cheap standard solutions in a wide
concentration range are available for these components. The reagents have nearly infinite stability over time. No gas cylinders
are necessary. Precise water vapor mixtures for calibration of moisture analyzers or for gas humidifying can be produced with
water and air or with another carrier gas. Vapor gas mixtures with organic components can be generated with organic
reagents. Span gas for multi component analysis can be easily achieved with mixed reagents. The elevated temperature of the
gas vapor mixture avoids adsorption and corrosion of gas exposed surfaces.
Schematic:
Technical Benefits:
• high accuracy: due to precise mass flow meter and balance controlled liquid metering
• can be verified with primary methods: by means of gas meter and balance
• quick gas response time: due to minimized adsorption effects
• moisture content up to 60 Vol.-%: due to liquid evaporation of up to 6 ml/min
• wide range of output: concentration range of 1:100 with one standard solution
• gas flow up to 1000 l/h as standard (higher gas flows as options)
• independent of temperature since evaporates completely
• gas temperatures up to 200 °C: adjustable depending on the application
• quick change of components by replacing the standard solution
• gas mixtures produced from combined standard solutions
• customer-defined components can be generated by the user
• point-of-use generation: the separate evaporation unit generates the span gas where it is needed
• easy portable in the portable case for quick change of location
Safety Benefits:
• low pressure of the generated span gas • no leakage problems: only the required amount of gas is produced
• fewer high-pressure cylinders lessen the safety risk • simple transport without safety precautions
• simple disposal e.g. by means of neutralization • simple storage of the standard solutions in plastic bottles

Security:
FumaGen H2 provides hydrogen "on demand" and shows - inherent to the system - a better
security. Unlike bottled gas supplies, where gases are compressed up to a pressure of 200 bar,
there is no need for special precautions (e.g. security cabinets). The maximum pressure is 10
bar. The generator stores ca. 1 - 1,5 l compressed gas. In an ordinary ventilated room the
explosion limit of hydrogen-air mixtures of 4 % will even locally never achieved. Additionally the
electronic system control notifies creeping leakages, gives an acoustic alarm and provides an
automatic system shut down, if the failure is not removed within 20 minutes from the onset.
We offer with the new product family fumaGen H2 a new generation cost effective generators for hydrogen and/oroxygen
production. They are easy to use, show nearly maintenance free operation and excel in a great extend of flexibility. A supply
with deionised water and a power socket are sufficient in order to supply hydrogen and /or oxygen all over there, where
bottled gas supply is too circuitous or needs to much footprint. Continuousoperation or for casual service. Firm - quiet -
simple. Application areas are e.g. supply of fuel cell test stations, gas supply for small soldering or welding tools and for
laboratory purposes.

Electrolysis Cells
Description:
We offer various PEM electrolysers and cell stacks in a sturdy construction. In addition to
single cells with active areas from 20 to 80 cm² also stacks up to 800 cm² surface are
affered. At current densities up to 400 mA/cm² electrolysers up to a power of 600 W are
realised. All of our delivered cells and stacks are designed for long life under industrial
conditions. Another characteristic is the high pressure resistance of our electrolysers.
Generally, all systems designed, so that hydrogen pressure up to 20 bar can be supplied.
So these electrolysers are used in hydrogen supply of laboratories and for continuous
emission measurements. The titanium electrolysers meet the highest demands on reliability,
even under high load while achieving a long life time.
The anode, used in all models, is made from titanium, the cathode is made of graphite,
titanium and stainless steel. In the described systems, it is possible to work permanently up
to the thermal limitation of the membranes. Even frequent load changes are easily coped.
Cathode and anode plates work wear-free.

Description:
The phosphoric acid fuel cell uses a liquid phosphoric acid electrolyte in a
silicone carbide matrix to carry hydrogen ions from the anode to the
cathode. The operating temperature range is 100 - 200 °C.
The fuel cells are designed for ease of use and many years of service. Gas
diffusion electrodes (ordered separately) are held in place between graphite
cellblocks. Flow fields machined into the blocks allow for the flow of
reactants and provide excellent electrical contact to the Membrane
Electrode Assembly electrodes. Current is collected by connection to copper
contact plates; separate voltage connectors are provided directly in the
cellblocks for maximum accuracy in iR measurement. Each unit includes
resistive heaters and thermocouple wells for accurate temperature control.
The cell is equipped with a reservoir for the continuous supply of
phosphoric acid to electrodes.
Accessories
Since the electrolyte in a Phosphoric Acid fuel cell is a liquid, the solution must be soaked in a matrix so that it can
be contained in the fuel cell.
ElectroChem’s phosphoric acid matrix assemblies are designed to provide consistent and reproducible
performance. Wet-proofed carbon paper is used as a support for 10 wt. % Pt/C based electrodes. High purity
silicon carbide, SiC, is used as the matrix.
Description:
The Conductivity Cell is a fixture for loading a membrane sample into your fuel cell
hardware for performing four-electrode conductivity tests.
The Conductivity Cell, with the membrane sample loaded, fits between the anode and
cathode conduction plates of your fuel cell hardware, making use of the existing gas flow
paths of the cell hardware. Your cell hardware and test stand are used to control the
sample temperature and pressure as well as the incoming gas composition and humidity
level.
The advantage of the four-electrode conductivity measurement is the ability to separate the
following measurements:
• voltage drop due to ion creation
• voltage drop due to ion flow
By considering only voltage drops due to ion flow, accurate assessments of membrane Fuel Cell Hardware
conductivity (and resistivity) can be made. The CdC-115 Conductivity Cell was designed Conductivity Cell - Assembled
for use with ElectroChem fuel cell hardware (for 5 and 25 cm²). in place of the MEA for pure
membrane testing
Components of Conductivity Cell:
• The Conductivity Cell is manufactured from PTFE (Teflon™), which is chemically inert, seals well against the carbon plates
of the cell hardware, and has the ability to withstand higher temperatures (up to 200 °C).
• Provides a gas-tight environment (when assembled in the fuel cell test hardware) for better control of humidity, pressure,
and temperature of the membrane sample during test.
• contains five ports:
- two for voltage measurement
- two for application of current
- one for insertion of a thermocouple near the membrane
• PTFE clamps secure the membrane in the Conductivity Cell
• Platinum wire carries voltage and current signals from the membrane to the controller
• Platinum gauze serves as catalyst site
Sample Data:
Following is a sample of conductivity test results for Nafion™112 using a scanning DC method.
Optional Designs:
CdC-110 Conductivity Clamp: for use in a beaker or in your humidity chamber.
CdC-112 Conductivity Cell: for use with Fuel Cell Technologies fuel cell hardware (5, 10 and 25 cm²).

PEM fuel cells are working in a temperature range of 20 ° up to 70 °C. The best working-temperature is between 50 ° up to
60 °C. The stacks are able to start at room temperature.
Usually the stack operates with pure hydrogen and air. Optional we deliver stacks for reformat gas or pure oxygen. The
construction-conditioned low pressure drop between inlet and outled of a cell enables to operate the stacks nearby ambient
pressure. The BZ 100 and BZ 560 have optionally the possibility for pressurised operation.
PEMFC-Stack BZ 560
Description:
The fuel cell stack BZ 560 is developed for outputs from 3 kWel up to 15
kWel. The BZ 560 is working at a temperature of 20 ° up to 70 °C and
allows on demand a pressurised operation up to 2 bar abs. The different
variation possibilities in using pure hydrogen, reformate gas with different
hydrogen concentrations, air or pure oxygen allows the use in a wide
range of applications. A very low pressure drop.

Electrodes
Description:
Anode and cathode electrodes for a fuel cell consist of catalyst loaded onto a gas diffusion backing. Gas diffuses through the
backing and is broken down by catalysis. Electrodes conduct current out of the cell. On the other end of the membrane
platinum is again used to bind the proton, electron, and an oxygen atom together to create water, ending the reaction.
ElectroChem’s gas diffusion electrodes are used in PAFC and PEM membrane electrode assemblies as well as in different
types of batteries. We use Platinum/Carbon catalyst with various loadings laminated to a hydrophobic backing (graphite fiber
paper or cloth is considered the best). Our standard electrode is made with 20 wt. % Pt/C catalyst on carbon paper.

Description:
Nafion™ Solution, solution (a diluted, liquid form of the same chemical used for a PEM fuel cell membrane) drastically
reduces the amount of platinum needed as a catalyst by exposing a larger fraction of the platinum to the hydrogen gas. Also,
the Nafion™ acts as a binding agent to hold the platinum, membrane, and carbon paper together. Nafion™ perfluorinated
ion-exchange solution is in a mixture of lower aliphatic alcohols and water. Contains 15 - 20 % water.
Teflon™, like the Nafion™, acts as a binding agent and sometimes replaces the Nafion™ solution for that purpose because it
is less expensive. Also, coating the carbon paper with Teflon™ prevents the paper from being saturated by liquid water, while
still letting water vapor through the pores.

Catalysts
Description:
The fuel cell creates power by oxidizing a hydrogen atom into a proton and an electron on anode electrode and reduced
oxygen atom with proton on cathode. In a PEM fuel cell, Platinum is used as the catalyst. A direct methanol fuel cell requires
the addition of Ruthenium as a catalyst. It is used to promote the oxidation and redirection reactions.
Electro catalysts for fuel cell applications contain 10 % or 20 % Pt on VULCAN XC-72R carbon support. Typical electro-
chemical area (ECA) for 20 % Pt/C is 100 m²/g. Typical ECA for 10 % Pt/C is 140 m²/g.
Pt/Ru electro-catalysts carbon monoxide tolerant electro-catalyst for direct methanol fuel cell applications contains 20 % Pt
and 10 % Ru (50 : 50 atomic ratio) on VULCAN XC-72R carbon support. 20 % Pt and 10 % Ru catalyst exhibits better
resistance to CO poisoning and it is well suited for direct methanol conversion fuel cells. The catalyst can also be used in
fuel cells operating in conjunction with gas reformers.

Graphite Plates
Description:
Attached to the electrode backings of a fuel cell stack on either side are large
graphite plates. These plates serve a double purpose. One purpose is to act as a
conductor by receiving the energy from the electrodes. Its other purpose is to
guide the flow of the hydrogen and oxygen through their respective ends of the
stack, making sure that the maximum amount of the gasses and moisture comes
in contact with the membrane. To prevent gasses from leaking out through the
normally porous graphite, the plates are constructed using a much longer and
more complex process that creates nonporous plates.

Heaters
Description:
While a PEM fuel cell will run at room temperature, it has maximum efficiency
at just below the boiling temperature of water (but not over, otherwise the
membrane will dry up, rendering it unable to carry protons). Therefore, heaters
are recommended for the test cells to run efficiently. The silicone rubber heater
is a small resistance heater pad that is attached to either end of the fuel cell.
The fire rod heater also a resistive element that is inserted into a matching
diameter hole in the graphite plates.

Electricity is available nearly everywhere and anytime. But still the availability of
a powerful and stable electric grid can not be guaranteed, e.g. In lodges, on
boats, in caravans. The assembling and the operation of such grid-off power
supply stations are also often very expensive. The fuel cell technology offers a
new possibility to supply such applications with electricity, especially if there is a
demand on low-noise, zero-emission electricity production and maintainability.
Description:
This fuel cell system is controled by a microprocessor control unit, which takes care
on all necessary conditions to ensure an reliable use of the system.
Usually the fuel cell system is build as a hybrid system including a standard
accumulator. This configuration (electricity out of the fuel cell as well as out of the
accumulator) results in higher dynamic behaviour, improved reliability, but also in
lower system costs. The fuel cell is designed for the base load and not for peak
loads. This results in a smaller fuel cell which is cost driver of such a system. Many
applications need much higher peak loads than average loads (e.g. starting current
at electric motors). The “Stromschachtel” provides 12 V DC or 24 V DC and
optionally 230 V AC with an permanent electrical power output of 1,2 kWel. Peak loads can be covered depending on the
type and size of accumulators.

Description:
With the latest achievements in solid metal hydride technology of AB5-type alloys and
unique techniques of alloy loading the HB-SCF-0010-Q is one the most advanced
hydrogen storage system. The HB-SCF-0010-Q can safely store hydrogen in the solid
state and release it steadily at ambient temperature without additional energy source - an
important issue for fuel cell application. The enhanced discharge gas flow rates of the HB-
SCF-0010-Q make it a highly competitive gas supply source for various PEM fuel cells (up
to 5 W).
At present, this type of storage is considered as safest one. Even gunshot tests with fully hydrogen charged tanks do not result
in any combustible reaction, which clearly demonstrates the safety level of the product. Unlike the high-pressure hydrogen
cylinders, here hydrogen is bonded with the alloy chemically. So, it will take hours, before the system will release it fully in
event of gas leakage caused by system’s damage. The system life cycle is incredibly long – our storage is able to pass few
thousand charge/discharge cycles without any essential changes in working technical characteristics.
While charge with only 99,99 % purity hydrogen the HB-SCF-0010-Q is capable to provide high purity hydrogen (over
99,9999 %). It makes HB-SCF-0010-Q an ideal pure hydrogen source for Fuel Cell systems, that is in addition easy to use
and very safe.
