Right?

Again, what is collocations? Collocations are combination of two or

more words that often go together.
Exactly! Collocations are combination of
word and we have 5 types of collocations, 1. Adverb + Adjective
what are those? 2. Adjective + Noun
3. Noun +Noun
4. Noun + Verb
5. Verb + Expression with

Very Good! Any question about None Ma’am

Collocations?

B. Motivation

Before we start, let’s have an activity first. (The students will do the task)
We will do it by playing a game “Number
substitution cypher”. All you need to do is
to exchange one letter with another number.

1 3 20 9 22 5 1 3 20 9 22 5
A C T I V E

16 1 19 19 9 22 5 16 1 19 19 9 22 5
P A S S I V E

That activity has something to do with our

discussion today, because our topic is all
about Active and Passive Voice.

PRE-ACTIVITY

Okay, class I want you to listen carefully as I

read the scenario;

“John saw a pretty girl. He went to talk to her.

Her husband arrived. The husband hit John on
the nose.”

1. What did the husband do? The husband hit John on the nose.
( Active voice is used in the answer)
2. What happened to John? John was hit on the nose by the
(Passive Voice is used in the answer) husband.

Notice on the sentences on the board. Analyze

its difference. It tells whether it is in the form
of Active or Passive voice. That is what we
are going to discuss now.

III. ANALYSIS

Let us Identify what is Voice.

Voice is the quality of verb that shows

whether the subject is the doer or receiver of
the action.

What is the difference between active and

passive voice?

Again what is Active voice? Please read. Active voice is used to indicate that the
subject of the sentence is the doer of the
action.
Okay, In active Voice the subject is the doer
of the action.

Let’s start with a very simple sentence.

The boy kicked the ball.

S V O

In this sentence, the subject is The boy who

does the action kicked since the subject is the
doer of the action and the verb kicked has a
direct object, we can say that the verb is in the
active voice.

Another examples:

A student wrote the winning essay.

Alexander Graham Bell invented the

Telephone.

The Chef prepared a delicious meal.

What are the subjects in the sentences?

Student, Alexander Graham Bell, Chef

Correct! Observe that the subject’s students,

Alexander Graham Bell and Chef are the doers
of the action.

What are the verbs?

Wrote, invented, prepared
Very Good! Those verbs are transitive verb
with direct objects, when the subject is the in
the sentences doe the action and the verb has a
direct object, we can say that the verb is in the
active voice.

Can you follow?

Yes Ma’am
In active voice, the subject is the doer of the
action. While in Passive it is what? Passive voice is used when the subject is
the receiver of the action.
Very Good! By this time the subject becomes
the receiver. Take a look on the first example,

Active Voice: The boy kicked the ball.

S V DO

By this time the subject is going to be the ball.

What happened to the ball?

Good. Who kicked the ball? The Ball kicked.
The ball kicked by the boy.
Passive Voice: The ball kicked by the boy.

Now, Study the following sentences:

The winning essay was written by a students.

The telephone was invented by Alexander

Graham Bell

A delicious meal was prepared by the chef.

In each sentences above, you will observe that

the subjects becomes the receiver instead of
being the doer of the action. If the subject is
the receiver of the action it is made up of
Is/are + past participle of the verb (simple
present tense) and Was/ were + past
participle of the verb (simple past tense).

Is that clear?
Yes Ma’am
Okay, Lets have an exercise.

Identify the voice of the verb in each

sentence.

1. Raul presented an interesting sentence.

2. Baseball was played by Joseph. 1. Active
3. Martin removed the old pants. 2. Passive
4. The national budget was approved by 3. Active
congress. 4. Passive
5. She cooked the breakfast.

3. Carlo interviewed the school
president.
