(CONJUNCTION/COORDINATORS)

LESSON: Introduction to Conjunction
LENGTH OF TIME: Two-class day

I. OBJECTIVES

A. Scan rapidly for sequence signals or connectors as basis for determining the
rhetorical organizations of text.
B. Define conjunctions
C. Enumerate the three kinds of conjunctions.
D. Differentiate the three kinds of conjunctions.
E. Connect words, phrases, and clauses using connectors.
F. Supply correct connector.
G. Apply knowledge gained on connectors by answering the assigned tasks.

Read the paragraph below and identify the conjunctions in each of the following
sentences.

Questions for Discussion: What can you say about the paragraph? Do you see conjunctions in
each of the sentences? How about coordinators? What are they and what do they connect? So,
based on the sentences, what do you think is the function of conjunction? What kind of
conjunctions are seen in the paragraph?

D. Giving of the Language Point or Focus Point


Conjunctions are words used to connect other words or group of words. There are
three types of conjunctions, these are the coordinators, subordinators and correlatives.
Coordinating conjunctions may connect two subjects, two predicates, two objects, two phrases
or even two simple sentences. ( Please see copy of the lesson at the back….)

Using Connectors ( Additional topics )


The four general classes of connectors are:
1. Additive (signals addition , alternative, similarity)
And or likewise
Moreover nor similarly
Further more also
In addition besides
2. Casual (signal cause/effect, reason/result)
Because due to thus
As in view of in order that
In as much as a consequence hence
So consequently so that
Since therefore
3. Adversative (signals conflict, contradictions, concession)
But however nevertheless
While whereas yet
Although thought even though
Despite this
4. Sequential (signals a chronological or logical sequence)
First… second next finally
Before eventually then
After afterward lastly

E. Guided Practice
Grammar Task I. Identifying Conjunctions. Underline conjunction in each of the sentence.
Then label each as coordinator, correlative and subordinator. (PLEASE.. SEE WORKSHEETS

1. During his fast, he neither ate food nor drank liquids.
2. They promise to return, for everyone had a good time.
3. Gordon bit his nails whenever he was nervous.
4. The judge listened to the explanation in order that he might decide fully.
5. Evan’s joke was not only silly but also too long.

V. ASSIGNMENT
1. Writing Activity. In an activity paper, think and describe any special program or
event celebrated here in school. Write at least two descriptive paragraph. Note and
underline all the connectors you used.
