Agriculture is the backbone of the Indian economy, as it supports the rural livelihood security.
More than 60 percent of Indian population depends on agriculture and its allied fields. The
Green Revolution in the late 1960s resulted in the increase of productivity of major cereals in
irrigated areas and has transformed Indian agriculture from food deficit to becoming food
sufficient. Despite periods of strong growth in the past, currently this sector faces various
challenges like climate change, declining water availability, degradation of land, increased biotic
pressure, high cost of cultivation, environmental degradation etc. The Central and state
government have different schemes to benefit farmers. But the benefits of the schemes do not
reach the farmer nor are the majority of the farmers aware of the schemes.
