General Precautions of EFI System Maintenance

I. Electronic fuel injection system general knowledge of maintenance

1.1 General Precaution for Maintenance

l Only digital multimeter and malfunction diagnosis intrument can be used to inspect the electronic fuel
injection system.
l To ensure normal operation of electronic controlled fuel injection, use the genuine parts for maintenance.
l Only unleaded gasoline should be used for maintenance.
l Please follow standard procedures of maintenance and diagnosis.Do not disassemble any part of the
electronic fuel injection system.
l Be very careful when holding the electronic components (electronic control unit, sensor etc.). Do not
drop them onto the ground.
l Be aware of the environmental protection. Properly dispose the waste generated in maintenance.

1.2 Precautions for Maintenance

1) Don’t disconnect any parts or connectors of the electronic fuel injection system, otherwise they may
be damaged or cause water, oil pollution and other impurities entering into connectors resulting in
impairing of performance.
2) Ignition switch should always be turned off when disconnecting/connecting connectors or the
electronic component will be damaged.
3) When performing trouble thermal simulation and other operation which may cause increase of
temperature, the temperature of electronic control unit must not be higher than 80°C.
4) As feed pressure of electronic fuel injection system is high (about 400kPa), all fuel pipes should be
of high resistance. Even with engine not running, the fuel pressure is relative high in the fuel pipe.
Therefore, do not disconnect the fuel pipe casually in maintenance. Perform the process of pressure
relief before disconnecting the fuel pipe if fuel system needs to be repaired. The process is as follows:
remove fuel pump relay and start engine and operate it at idling speed; connect diagnosis instrument;
enter into “actuator test” to stop fuel pump until engine stops automatically. Removal of fuel pipe
and the replacement of fuel filter should be conducted by professional technicians at place of good
ventilation.
5) To prevent electric spark which may cause fire accident, do not electrify the fuel pump when it is
removed from fuel tank.
6) Do not test the fuel pump in dry state or in water, otherwise service life may be impaired. Do not
connect the positive and negative electrode wrong.
7) During inspection of ignition system, perform the sparking test only when necessary and the testing
time should be as short as possible. Throttle can not be open, or unburned fuel will enter into the
exhaust pipe resulting in three-element catalyst converter damaged.
8) As idling speed is adjusted completely by electronic fuel injection system, no human adjustment is
needed. The accelerator limit screw of throttle body is adjusted before leaving factory. Users must
not change it under any conditions.
9) Connecting the positive and negative electrode wrong may cause electronic components damaged.
Negative ground is used in this system.
10) Battery cable must not be disconnected with engine running.
11) Before electric welding, disconnect positive and negative electrode of the battery and remove
electronic components.
12) Do not transpierce the skin of the wire to test the input and output electric signals of parts.

II. Diagnosis Flow for Inspection and Maintenance by ME7 System

according to P-CODE
Descriptions:

1. Te following items of inspection and maintenance are performed only after the malfunction has been
confirmed to be a steady-state malfunction currently, and otherwise it will lead to diagnostic errors.
2. The “multimeter” mentioned on following occasions indicates the digital multimeter. It is prohibited to
examine the lines of electronic injection system using pointer multimeter.
3. In the case when vehicle with anti-theft system is inspected and repaired, if the occasion for replacement
of ECU appears in the column of “Follow-up Steps”, pay attention that the anti-theft system must be
matched after replacement.
4. In this system: When P-CODEs of P000A, P000B, P0012, P0015, P0170, P0171, P0172, P0219, P0560,
P0562, P0563, P0668, P0704, P1336, P1559, P1564, P1579, P1604, P1651 and P2138 exists, the SVS
and MIL lamps will not turn on in either of the cases.
5. If P-CODE indicates that the voltage of certain circuit is too low, it indicates that the short circuit to
ground may possibly exist in this circuit. If P-CODE indicates that the voltage of certain circuit is too
high, it indicates that short circuit to power supply may possibly exist in this circuit. If P-CODE indicates
that it is the malfunction of certain circuit, it indicates that open circuit may possibly exist or multiple
line malfunctions exist in this circuit.

6. In this system, the mark is the SVS lamp and the mark is the MIL lamp.
Diagnostic Help:
1. In the case when malfunction cannot be removed, the malfunction belongs to a steady-state
malfunction.
The priority is to be given to examine whether or not loosening effect exists with the joint of wire
harness if it is random malfunction.
2. Examination has been made according to the abovementioned steps, and no anomalies are found.
3. Don’t ignore vehicle maintenance status, cylinder pressure, mechanical ignition timing, and other
factors of impact on the system during inspection and maintenance.
4. Test shall be performed, if ECU is to be replaced.
If the P-CODE can be removed at this point, then the malfunction part is at ECU, and if P-CODE
still cannot be removed at this point, then the original ECU shall be changed back, to carry out the
work on inspection and maintenance once again, in the repeated flow.

30. P0133 Upstream Oxygen Sensor Deteriorated Malfunction (Cycle)

Description about Malfunction Cause:
Under normal circumstances, the air-fuel ratio of combustible mixed gas is switched between rich and lean.
Accordingly, the oxygen sensor signal will be represented in a continuous fluctuation in the signal value of
amplitude. After oxygen sensor is aged, the perceptive sensitivity to the mixed gas will drop, which is
represented by a slowed cycle of signal fluctuation. ECU will calculate the mean cycle of signals according to
corresponding algorism, and will determine that the sensor is already aged, if it is found that it is slower than
the preset critical value.

60. P0321 BM Signal of DG (Rotational Speed Sensor) to Revolution Signal Gear Notch
Lost Frequently (Signal Malfunction of Rotational Speed Sensor)
Description about Malfunction Cause:
60-2 tooth speed test system is adopted, and the 60-2 inductive gear ring is installed on the flywheel to rotate
along with the flywheel (rotational speed consistent to crankshaft) so as to generate magnetic change in the
sensor, thus to generate induced AC voltage with its frequency based on the rotational speed. The signal
circuit of ECU transforms the input sine wave into square wave, and when ECU detects that the distance
between certain two square waves on the falling edge is larger than the spacing between the two teeth, the
reference position is immediately found. Physically this reference tooth pitch corresponds to the specific
position of the 1st cylinder, and the system internally defines the second falling edge behind the gear ring as
the software reference point signal (BM), and the angle of rotation for the crankshaft of the software reference
point away from the upper dead center of the 1 st cylinder is a fixed value of 108°CA. Hence whenever the
crankshaft rotates for once circle, the system will receive a software reference point signal, and the position of
the system and the crankshaft maintain “synchronized” based on this software reference point signal, further
to ensure the control over correct fuel injection, intake, and ignition timing.
If any of the under-mentioned cases is found, it is then determined to be the malfunction of crankshaft
software reference signal (BM).
1. It is frequently found that the measured crankshaft software reference point signal (BM) is ahead or
behind the expected emerging position.

2. The rotational speed signal may be detected but the crankshaft software reference point signal (BM)

of the rotational speed sensor cannot be received, the system will determine that the signals of rotational speed

62. P0327 Circuit Voltage of Knock Sensor Signal Too low

Description about Malfunction Cause:
The knock sensor is installed on the engine body. The engine vibrates in different frequency of vibration
under different operating conditions, and generates voltage signals containing various frequencies. The
voltage signal may not only reflect whether or not the engine has experienced knock but also reflect the
background noise value of the engine (the noise of mechanical parts). When the engine is operating normally
and the knock sensor is working normally, the background noise value will fluctuate within the specified
range. Once the background noise value is lower than the set threshold, the system then believes that
malfunction exists in the signal circuit of the knock sensor.

72. P0420 Three-Way Catalyst Converter Oxygen Storage Capacity Aged (Emission over
Standard)
Description about Malfunction Cause:
Corresponding relationship exists between the transformation efficiency of the three-way catalyst converter
and its oxygen storage capacity, while the value of amplitude for the downstream oxygen sensor may
indirectly reflect the oxygen storage capacity of the catalyst. It indicates that the poorer the oxygen storage
capacity is, the larger value of amplitude the signal fluctuation of oxygen sensor is, and the poorer the
corresponding transformation capacity of the catalyst converter is. The main principle for diagnosis of the
catalyst converter is for the system to monitor the value of amplitude for voltage fluctuation of the
downstream oxygen sensor, and if the measured amplitude exceeds the set limit value, the system will
determine it to be the malfunction of the three-way catalyst converter.

123. P2177 Air-Fuel Ratio for Self-Learning Value under Closed-Loop Control
Exceeding Upper Limit (Mid-Load Area)
Description about Principle and Malfunction Cause:
In order to optimize the integrated transformation efficiency of catalytic converter to HC, CO, and NOx, the
air-fuel ratio of the mixed gas shall be controlled at 14.7:1. If it is found the deviation in manufacture of parts,
the sedimentation of colloidal matters in gasoline on the fuel injector, the air intake pipeline, or the back of
valve, and air leakage exists with intake and exhaust system, all these factors will give rise to a deviation from
14.7:1 in the air-fuel ratio to different degrees (rich or lean), which will lead to deteriorated emission and
reduction in engine performance.
The engine control system is able to make amendments and self-learning on fuel injection volume according
to the degree and characteristic of deviation in air-fuel ratio. The self-learning of deviation in air-fuel ratio is
divided into “Self-learning in Small Load Area” and “Self-learning in Medium Load Area”. The system will

air-fuel ratio of the mixed gas shall be controlled at 14.7:1.
The system will
determine it to be the malfunction of rich mixed gas, when self-learning in medium load area reaches the
lower limit value set by the system (rich mixed gas, and the system continuously decreasing the fuel injection
volume up to the minimum value).

Description about Malfunction Cause:
Normally, air-fuel ratio of combustible mixed gas is changed between thick and thin alternatively.
Correspondingly, amplitude of oxygen sensor signal varies frequently as series of pulse. If sensor deteriorates,
its sensitivity to the mixture may decrease and the characteristic curve deviates, causing slow adjustment of
mixed gas. ECU can calculate deterioration factor as per relevant algorithm through rear oxygen voltage; if
calculation results show that deterioration factor exceeds preset upper limit threshold value, it is determined to
be upper limit of deterioration factor exceeded.

Description about Malfunction Cause:
Under normal circumstances, the signals of downstream oxygen sensor shall fluctuate up and down the

III. Diagnostic Flow for Inspection and Maintenance by M7 System

according to Malfunction Symptoms
Before enabling the malfunction diagnostic steps as per engine malfunction symptoms, please firstly perform
the primary inspections below
1. Confirm that the engine malfunction indicator lamps are working normally
2. Use malfunction diagnostic instrument for inspection and confirm no malfunction information record is
available
3. Confirm that the malfunction symptom in the owner’s complaint exists, and confirm trouble causes.
Then proceed to appearance inspection:
(1) Check fuel pipeline for any leakage;
(2) Check vacuum pipe for rupture or twist, and for correct connection;
(3) Check intake pipeline for blockage, leakage, pressed, or damaged;
(4) Check high voltage wire of ignition system for rapture or ageing, and for correct ignition sequence;
(5) Check whether or not the wire harness grounding is clean and firm;
(6) Check whether or not the joints of respective sensors and actuators are loosened or under bad contact
condition
Important Notes: If the abovementioned symptoms exist, the maintenance operation is then to be performed
firstly aiming at the corresponding malfunction symptoms, otherwise, the malfunction diagnosis and
maintenance afterwards will be affected.

Diagnostic Help:
1. Confirm no engine malfunction record is available at all
2. Confirm the complained malfunction symptom exists
3. It has been inspected according to the abovementioned steps, and no anomaly has been found
4. Don’t ignore vehicle maintenance status, cylinder pressure, mechanical ignition timing, fuel status, and
other factors that impacts on the system in the process of inspection and maintenance
5. Replace ECU and perform test.
At this point if the malfunction symptom can be removed, then the malfunction is located at ECU, and if
the malfunction symptom still exists, then the original ECU shall be changed back, to carry out the work
on inspection and maintenance, in the repeated flow.
