Exam One – Chapters 12 and 13

You may use the data and equations package and a calculator while taking this
exam. Send the exam back to me the same way you have been getting your
homework to me.

You must show all your work for the real possibility of being awarded partial
credit for an incorrect answer.

1. Your instructor loves to barbeque but dislikes having to wait for the
charcoal to get going. List three ways Dr. Seela can reduce the time he
has to wait for the charcoal to get going enough to start cooking. For
each way, use the concepts learned in the kinetics chapter to explain why
this will reduce the time needed. The three students that come up with
the best way of reducing the time needed will get an extra bonus point
(provided you also have the correct explanation for how it reduced the
time). You need to be specific as to what you want Dr. Seela to do (his
wife says he needs good directions to follow).

Method 1

Method 2
Method 3

2. You are studying the following reaction.

2A(aq) + B(aq) + C(aq) -> E(aq) + 2D(aq)

You perform several experiments and gather the following data:

Experiment [A] [B] [C] Rate of Temperature Rate of

# Reaction of in C Reaction
A (M/sec) (M/sec)
1 1.00 2.00 1.00 1.0 x 10-2 25
2 1.00 2.00 2.00 4.0 x 10-2 25
3 1.00 1.00 1.00 1.0 x 10-2 25
4 2.00 2.00 2.00 8.0 x 10-2 25
5 1.00 2.00 2.00 9.5 x 10-2 35

a) Fill in the Rate of Reaction for each experiment.

b) The rate law for the reaction is given by rate reaction = k

[A]x[B]y[C]z

What are the values for the three exponents, x, y, and z?

c) What is the value of the rate constant at 25 ?. Provide correct units.

d) What is the value of the rate constant at 35 C? Provide correct units.

e) What is the activation energy for this reaction? Provide correct units.

f) What is the value of A, the Arrhenius factor, for this reaction? Provide
correct units.
For questions 2-5, use the following equation and data.

3A(aq) + 2B(aq) + C(aq)  2D(aq) + 3E(aq)

Rate reaction = k [A][B][C]2 k at 25 C = 2.3 x 10-2 and Eact = 82500

J/mole

A = 6.7 x 1012

3. You are running the reaction at 50 C with [A] = [B] = [C] = 0.020 M. What
is the rate of formation of E (in M/sec)?

4. You have a catalyst which decreases the activation energy of the reaction
by 50,000 J/mol. How many times faster will the reaction be at 50 C if
the concentrations of all reactants remain at 0.020 M and the value of A
remains 6.7 x 1012?
5. You are doing an uncatalyzed reaction at 50 C and need a rate of reaction
of 8.7 x 10-6 M/sec and you have [A] = 0.040 M and [B] = 0.080 M. What
[C] will need to be present to give the needed rate?

6. The rate constant for the following reaction at 25 C is 6.3 x 10-3/M sec.

2H2O2(aq)  2H2O(l) + O2(g)

You started with 2.0 L of a solution containing some H2O2 and found after
3.4 minutes you had 0.35 M H2O2 remaining. What was the molarity of
the H2O2 you started with?
How many moles of O2 were produced during these 3.4 minutes?
7. You add 50. g of C2H4(OH)2, ethylene glycol, to 50.0 g of water. What is
the freezing point of the solution? Kf for water is 1.86 C/molal.

8. You add 75 g of PCl5 to 125 g of SeF6 and warm the mixture to 40 C. At
this temperature the vapor pressure of PCl5 is 55 mmHg while that for
SeF6 is 75 mmHg. What is the vapor pressure of the mixture at this
temperature?
If you were to collect the gas above this mixture and condense it, what
mole fraction of it would be PCl5?
9. The vapor pressure of a pure liquid at 65 C is 440 mmHg. You dissolve
2.42 grams of an unknown solid (a non-electrolyte) into 55 grams of the
liquid. The vapor pressure is observed to drop to 431 mmHg. What is the
molar mass of the unknown solid? The molar mass of the liquid is 85.4
grams.

10.10 mL of glycerin (whose structure is below) is added to 10 mL of water

and 10 mL of CCl4. A small amount of solid CuCl2 was then added to this

mixture. Explain what you would see.

11.Ethylene glycol (shown below) is being added to some potential solvents.
Circle the solvent from each pair in which it would be more soluble and
provide a reason for your choice.

a) Water or hexanes (a mixture of compounds with the formula C6H14)

b) CHCl3 or CCl4

c) C6H6 or glycerin
12.A 2.35 M MgCl2 solution has a density of 1.32 g/mL. What is the molality
of this solution?
