MODULE PHY3-S1 Qualitative Description of Motion

Activity

Software Requirement:
Computer must have Adobe Flash player installed and enabled.
Available on their website: https://www.adobe.com/sea/products/flashplayer/distribution.html

Simulation PHET Program:

Available at https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/forces-and-motion-basics

I. Procedures (Mass vs Speed at constant Force)

1. Open the simulation program by clicking the link given above.

2. Click the play button and wait for the simulation program to load.

3. When the simulation options appear, click the second figure labeled as Motion.

4. This must be the screen that you are looking at.

LABEL PANEL

RESET BUTTON

FORCE BUTTON

5. Before any simulation, make sure to check all the items at the label panel just to have an idea of the
values of force, mass, and speed.

6. The simulation will start once you slide the force button.

Important Note: Release the force button immediately once you slide it to the maximum 500
Newton value.

Increasing the mass placed on top of the roller platform.

1. Starting with 50-kg box, slide the force button up to the maximum and note the speed indicated.

2. Add another 50-kg box on top of the first one and slide again the force button up to the maximum
and note the speed indicated.

3. Click reset and replace the box with the 200-kg refrigerator and slide again the force button up to
the maximum and note the speed indicated.

4. For procedures 1, 2 & 3 above, record the speed of the moving object(s) on the table given below.

Object on top of the roller platform Speed

50-kg box
50-kg box + 50-kg box
200-kg refrigerator

Question: With the same amount of force, what can you say about the speed with increasing amount of
mass?

II. Procedures (Mass vs Acceleration at constant Force)

1. Open the simulation program by clicking the link given above.

2. Click the play button and wait for the simulation program to load.

3. When the simulation options appear, click the fourth figure labelled as Acceleration.

4. This must be the screen that you are looking at.

5. Before the simulation, make sure that the values, masses, speed and acceleration are checked on the
label panel with friction button placed at none for all simulations.

6. The simulation will start once you slide the force button.
