Fan Cart Physics

I. Introduction
Experiment with a cart (with three fans) on a linear track to study Newton's Laws. Cart and fans have mass.
The fans' direction can be changed according on the cart's position, velocity, and acceleration.

II. Objective
● Observe the relationship between force, mass, and acceleration
● See that when no net force is applied, objects will not speed up or slow down
● Notice that a force applied in one direction causes an object to move in the opposite direction

III. Materials
● Worksheet; Computer/Laptop

IV. Procedures
1. Open the given link to Fan Cart Physics
a. Link:https://gizmos.explorelearning.com/index.cfm?method=cResource.dspDetail&ResourceID=
403&ClassID=5331970
2. Explore the two activities about laws of motion and answer the given questions in 1-2 sentences.

Activity A: Get the Gizmo ready:

● Click Reset.
Newton’s first law
● Remove all fans from the cart.

Question: What happens to the cart when there is no force?

Form hypothesis: What will the motion of the cart be like when there is no force at all? (There is no friction in this
model.)
If there is no friction, the Cart will continue to move continuously.

Predict: Suppose a cart with no fans has a starting velocity of 2 m/s. What will be the velocity of the cart when it
reaches the wall?
The velocity is 0

1. Experiment: Check that there are no fans on the cart. On the DESCRIPTION tab, set the Initial velocity of cart to 2.0
m/s. Select the BAR CHART tab, and click Play.

What do you notice about the velocity of the cart? The Velocity only stayed at 2.00,
2. Experiment: Click Reset. Place two fans on the cart, and point them in opposite directions. (Next to DIRECTION,
click the button for one fan.) Turn both fans on, and click Play.
What do you notice about the velocity of the cart? Only being constant at 2, the Velocity did not change. The reason
the velocity didn't change was because the fans were blowing in the opposite direction and the force were balanced.
3. Draw conclusions: Newton’s first law states that an object in motion will travel at a constant velocity unless acted
upon by an unbalanced force. How do these experiments show this?

The study demonstrates Newton's first law, which states that a moving object will continue to move at a constant
speed until it encounters an unbalanced force. It was demonstrated that when the three fans are turned on and two of
them are facing to the left and the third to the right, an unbalanced force is present.
Get the Gizmo ready:
Activity B:
● Click Reset.
Newton’s second law ● Set the Initial velocity of cart to 0.0 m/s.
● Place three fans on the cart, all blowing to the left.

Question: How do mass and force affect acceleration?

1. Experiment: Turn on the fans. Click Play and watch the cart, then select the TABLE tab.

A. Scroll to the bottom of the table. What is the final velocity of the cart?
4.90_____________________________

B. How long did it take the cart to reach the end of the track? 4.1 seconds ______________________________

2. Calculate: Acceleration is a measure of how much the velocity of the cart changes each second. To calculate
acceleration, divide the final velocity by the amount of time it took to reach that velocity. The units of acceleration are
meters per second per second, or m/s2.

A. What is the acceleration of the cart? (Include units.) 1.20

___________________________________________

B. Check your answer on the TABLE tab. Were you correct? __yes____________________________________

3. Form hypothesis:

A. How do you think changing the mass of the cart will affect its acceleration?
___ Changing the mass of the cart will affect the acceleration because there are less fans

____________________________________________

B. How do you think the number of fans will affect the cart’s acceleration?
It will make the cart faster if there are more fans

4. Experiment: Select the BAR CHART tab and turn on Show numerical values. For each of the situations below,
record the acceleration of the cart.

Number of fans Screenshot from the BAR

3 fans, 0 blocks 1 .40

3 fans, 0 blocks 3 1.20

3 fans, 2 blocks 1 .20

3 fans, 2 blocks 2 .40

3 fans, 2 blocks 3 .60

5. Analyze: Look at the acceleration values.

A. How did doubling the force affect the acceleration of the cart?
The acceleration of the cart will double
___________________________________________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________________________________

B. A cart with two blocks and three fans has twice the mass as a cart with just three fans. How did doubling the
mass affect the acceleration of the cart?
_The cart was a little slow because the mass is heavy
