Most Essential Learning Competency: Investigate the relationship between the amount
of force applied and the mass of the object to the amount of change in the object’s
motion.

Answer Pool:
F = ma force Newton(N)
Newton’s second law of motion states that, “The acceleration of a body is directly
proportional to the (1)_____________ acting on the body and inversely proportional to the
(2)____________ of the body and is in the direction of the net force. The (3)___________
of an object is always in the direction of the net force. The law of acceleration is expressed
as an exact equation as a = F/m or (4)____________.
In the second law of motion, Newton gives a more precise idea of force. He says in
effect that force is anything that can accelerate an object. For a given object, twice the force
results in (5)___________ the acceleration. The more mass an object has the more force is
needed to move or accelerate the object. The SI unit of force is (6)____________ which is
equivalent to kg.m/s2.
Directions: Pair the words with their corresponding description or definition. Write
your answer in Figure 1.

Directions: Given the illustrations, answer the questions briefly and concisely.
1. Friends in the neighborhood gather together to play tumbang preso. As part of the game, each
participant strikes an empty can with a slipper. Clifford strikes the can with a certain amount
of force. If Jerwin strikes the can double the force of Clifford, how is the acceleration of the
empty can affected?

2. Audrey enjoys playing piko or hopscotch. She uses a puck or marker which is a smooth flat
stone. To land from one box to another, she has to jump and kick the marker using only one
leg. If she uses a heavier marker with twice the mass of the first one, how far the stone will
go or how will it be accelerated if she kicks it with the same force?
3. The rain is about to come so Shiela went to fetch her two goats, a mother and a kid, grazing
on the green meadows not far enough from their house. The goats wanted to eat more
grasses so Shiela has to pull them with all her strength to put them under the shade of a tree.
Which of the goats will require a greater force? The mother who has a greater mass or the
kid with a lesser mass? Why?

4. Tristan trains his cousin J-boy how to balance in a skateboard. He pushes his cousin while
his cousin stands on the skateboard. If the net force he acts to his cousin is somehow tripled,
by how much does the acceleration increase? Why do you say so?
5. If a body has no acceleration like the stationary cow below, can you conclude that no force is
acting on it?

Questions:
1. Compare your observations to the motion or the distance traveled by the pieces of onion and
garlic when they are hit by the small can of sardines and by the big can of sardines.
2. How does the increase in mass affect the force of objects in motion?
3. How does the amount of force of the can affect the acceleration or the distance traveled by the
ingredients?
4. Suppose you use an even bigger can or increase the mass of the can, what will be your
observation on the pieces of ingredients when they are hit by it?
5. How does this activity relate to Newton’s second law? Explain.
Application:
Explain how the law of acceleration is applied in each indigenous game.

1. force
2. mass
3. acceleration
4. F = ma
5. twice
6. Newton (N)
1. Given:
m = 2 kg a = 2.0 m/s2
Formula : F = ma
F = (2 kg)(2.0 m/s2)
Answer: F=4N
2. Given:
m = 5 kg a = 8.0 m/s2
Formula : F = ma
F = (5 kg)(8.0 m/s2)
Answer: F = 40 N
3. Given:
Formula : m = F/a
Answer: m = 2 kg
4. Given:
Formula : m = F/a
m = 6 N / 12.0 m/s2
Answer: m = 0.5 kg
5. Given:
m = 4 kg F = 20 N
Formula : a = F/m
a = 20 N / 4 kg
Answer: a = 5 m/s2
For Challenging Activities: Work and Play with Newton
2. The ball has greater mass therefore it exerts more force on the pieces of domino so the
pieces of domino knock down. According to the second law of motion, mass and force
are directly proportional while force and acceleration are also directly proportional.
