FOREWORD

This self-learning kit will serve as a guide for the learners to

understand Newton’s Second Law of Motion - The Law of
Acceleration. It will help them learn about the effects of force
applied and the mass of the object to the amount of change in
the object’s motion.

In this learning kit, learners will know the relationship between

the mass of the object, and the amount of force needed. The
force is the primary cause of change in motion.

In this SLK, learners will know Newton’s Second Law of Motion

which focus not only on the Science concepts, principles, and
theories, but on its link to how important it is to their day-to-day
activities.

II. WHAT I NEED TO LEARN

DISCUSSION

Newton’s Second Law of Motion: Law of Acceleration

The acceleration of an object depends directly upon the net

force (Fnet)acting on the object, and inversely proportional on
mass (m) of the object. When the force acting to an object is
increased, the acceleration of the object is increased. As the mass
of an object is increased, the acceleration of the object is
decreased.

Forces are Unbalanced

There is an Acceleration

The acceleration The acceleration

depends directly depends inversely
upon the “net force”. upon the object’s
mass.

www.physicsclassroom.com

The Big Equation:

a=Fnet / m
Fnet = m x a
m= Fnet /a

Where a=acceleration (m/s2)

Fnet = net force (1 Newton = 1kg.m/s2)

m = mass (kg)

7
➢ …net force, In Newton’s Law, net force means we are dealing
with an equivalent unbalanced force. If we add up all the forces
acting in the system, the resultant vector, which is non-zero, is the
net force.

➢ …the mass, the more massive an object is, you would need a
greater amount of force to accelerate it at a certain value.

➢ …the acceleration, a net force would cause objects to

change in motion. A change of motion implies a change in
velocity. A change in velocity implies that the body undergoes
an acceleration. (Science and Technology IV ePhysics, p.239)

Sample Problem 1

If a crate accelerates at 2.5 m/s2 and if the net force exerted

is about 600 N, what is the mass of the crate ?

Given: a = 2.5 m/s2

Fnet = 600 N
Find: m
Formula: m = Fnet/a
Solution:
m = 600 kg.m/s2
2.5 m/s2
m = 240 kg

Sample Problem 2
An object with a mass of 6 kg accelerates 4 m/s2 when an
unknown force is applied to it. What is the amount of force?

Given: m = 6kg
a = 4m/s2
Find: Fnet
Formula: Fnet = m x a
NegOr_Q1_Science 8_SLK Week 1_V2

8
Solution:
Fnet = 6 kg x 4m/s2
Fnet = 24 kg.m/s2 or 24 N

Sample Problem 3
An object with a mass of 5 kg has a force of 20 N applied to
it. What is the resulting acceleration of the object?

Given: m = 5 kg
Fnet = 20 N
Find: a
Formula: a= Fnet/m

Solution:
a = 20 kg.m/s2/ 5 kg
a= 4 m/s2
