Thermodynamics 1 – Mid Term

Please choose 4 out of 5 questions provided in your exam sheets. In each question, the information on
the maximum points you can get from solving the problem is provided. You can do all the questions if you
want but the maximum total score will be 100 and only the 4 highest mark solutions will be considered
for the final grade. If the reference data is not enough to solve the problem, please use the appendix
section of your thermodynamics’ textbook or find the relevant data online.

1. The following table gives data, in kJ, for a system undergoing a power cycle consisting of four
processes in series. Determine, the (a) missing table entries, each in kJ, and (b) the thermal
efficiency. (20 points)

2. This figure shows a cylindrical tank being drained through a duct whose cross-sectional area is
3x10-4 m2. The velocity of the water at the exit varies according to (2gz)1/2, where z is the water
level, in m, and g is the acceleration of gravity, 9.81 m/s2. The tank initially contains 2500 kg of
liquid water. Taking the density of the water as 103 kg/m3, determine the time, in minutes, when
the tank contains 900 kg of water. (20 points)

3. For the desuperheater shown in Fig. below, liquid water at state 1 is injected into a stream of
superheated vapor entering at state 2. As a result, saturated vapor exits at state 3. Data for steady
state operation are shown on the Figure. Ignoring stray heat transfer and kinetic and potential
energy effects, determine the mass flow rate of the incoming superheated vapor, in kg/min. (30
points)

4. Steady-state operating data for a simple steam power plant are provided in the following Figure.
Stray heat transfer and kinetic and potential energy effects can be ignored. Determine the (a)
thermal efficiency and (b) the mass flow rate of the cooling water, in kg per kg of steam flowing.
(30 points)

5. Separate streams of steam and air flow through the turbine and heat exchanger arrangement
shown in the following figure. Steady state operating data are provided on the figure. Heat
transfer with the surroundings can be neglected, as can all kinetic and potential energy effects.
Determine (a) T3 in K, and (b) the power output of the second turbine, in kW. (30 points)
